Affordable hunter or bowie knife

I posted a similar question recently, but found out I'd inadvertently posted it in the review forum. So I'll ask again here, hoping that this is a more suitable venue.

I would like to get recommendations for a good hunter or bowie knife, around 5" blade length. My budget is $50. I'm not particularly interested in stainless steel blades. I was thinking about damascus, but realize my budget is probably too small for that. (Nevertheless, as a second question, I wouldn't mind getting recommendations for a good damascus knife as well. Give me a hint of what I should expect to shell out.) I'm pretty new to this, and find the variety of brands and models rather bewildering. Please help! :)

the only thing I can think of is the Buck Pathfinder, which sports a 5 inch blade, or the Buck Guide which has a 5.5 inch blade. They run 40 to 50 bucks from a discounter...

Also, an Air Force Survival knife is excellent for about 30 to 40 dollars.

Thank you for those recommendations. Do you know which steel that are used for the Buck blades?

Yeah Buck seems like your best bet for $50...they are all stainless AFAIK, but I don't know what kind. Camillus and Kabar also make fighting style knives which can be used as a hunter for under $50. Check out the mini-kabar with a 5" blade.

Might be able to still nail a John Greco Flat grind fixed blade for $50 (before S&H)
You can try and look around the forums for a fixed blade...
I'm not sure how well the SRK would be a good hunter, but it's a bowie....

Hey, thanks for all the replies, guys!

The Cold Steel SRK wasn't too far from what I had in mind. Some of the Ka-tar knives looked interesting as well. Are the John Greco knives on sale for $50 a good deal? I guess I'm more or less wanting an all-purpose knife, but I'd like a really good one, ideally a notch or two better than the mass-produced SSSS (Solingen Stainless Steel Stuff).

Thanks again, and keep the recommendations going! :)

You can get a Cold Steel Master Hunter in stainless or Carbon V on ebay for under $50.00. This would be my first choice.

There are always a lot of Anza knives on ebay as well. Might find an atractively priced Marble's knife there as well.

Concerning eBay, could someone give recommendations about reputable sellers? I want to avoid the rip-offs and scams...

It takes a little while to fully appreciate ebay. For now you can look at a sellers feedback, legnth of membership, and other items for sale by this member.

Hello,

You will not get a better blade for $50, than one of John Grecos.... PERIOD. Custom/handmade quality for pennies!

If you want something beefier, the Becker knife and tool BK7 Utility has a clip point Bowie style blade, easily obtainable for less than $50. It has a jum rated kydex lined sheath too, and it's made in America. Not the most stylish or fashionable blade for sure, but it is a very capable blade.

Regards,

Doug
