Affordable Jackets?

I'm looking for something along the lines of what TAD Gear or Northface offers. I'm hoping to find something a bit more reasonably price though.

I'd prefer a jacket that has no hood but a hood is fine as well. It needs to come in black and isn't cut super big, wide, or long. This would be a fall/early winter jacket.

I'd really like to keep it under $100 or so. I really like a few of the jackets that TAD has but they're way out of my current price range.

So let's list it all as guidelines:

- Must come in a small
- Black
- In the $100 ballpark, preferably under $100.
- Fall/Early Winter jacket

Thanks!

That Condor looks nice - do you think that it would be sufficient for skiing, too?
I'm afraid my brother in law and my nephews will get me into that in this winter... ;)

The only thing i dislike a bit are the velcro pads on the shoulder, but... it's no deal breaker for me, so... let's see... :-)

PS.: 23:30 of the nutnfancy review could be interesting to potential buyers...

I have a basic black wind resistant fleece jacket from REI that has been great. Looks good, simple design and well under $100 ( a few years ago). I've worn it skiing with and without a shell.

Go to REI and look at their selection. Since there is not a middleman in the process, you can get a really high quality jacket at a much lower price than the other outdoor brands. I have their One jacket that I like a lot. It is no longer around, but I think that the new Neo jacket is the same thing.

Check out the discount stores in your area like Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls etc. They get a lot of quality outdoor clothing. I picked up a Columbia fleece jacket for $25 (Normal retail is $90) Also got a Helly Hansen jacket for $40 (Retail was $200!)

what storl said, and also keep a tab with steepandcheap.com open in your browser. they often have amazing deals on really nice outerwear.

sierratradingpost.com is where I have gotten my best deals

They almost always have-
marmot
mountain hardwear
lowe alpine
columbia
ex officio

Our JC Penneys often has Columbia jackets. Dirt cheap when on sale.

I've bought Campmor-brand products in the past. Excellent bargains.

Ditto what TLR says about Sierra Trading Post. I could care less if they're last year's colors.

I just picked up a Northface Denali fleece for crazy cheap at the outlet. Got it for 66 bucks and I believe they come in black and small. Might be worth checking out if you have an outlet nearby. Don't know if they have an online one.

I have a Columbia fleece jacket that's almost a complete ripoff of the Denali model from The North Face, good thing is though, it only cost me 40 bucks.

Go to your local Mil Surp store and get a M65 field jacket.

Also the Cloud Layer pullover fleece is a great piece I use it at work and all the time when the weather gets a little colder.

I've gotten jackets from Cabela's. They have good stuff there. They also have a clearance "bargain cave" for sale items.

Also check out some of the factory outlets. My kids have gotten some good deals there.

One of my kids got a nice Northface fleece jacket at SportsBasement for a decent price.

+1, REI has some great stuff. And their warranty is top notch as well.

I've got several fleece and softshell jackets from Columbia, The North Face, Arc'teryx including these shown here. By far the best/most versatile one I own is the Arc'teryx Easyrider softshell. I live in Toronto where we get some pretty cold winters and granted this past winter was mild by comparison, this is the jacket I wore for most of the winter. The only time I wore something else was if I wore one of my leather jackets when going out, or when I wore a heavier coat with hood if it was snowing.
It was retailing for about $330Cdn but I got it on sale for about $220. It's a lot of $$ for a "fleece softshell" considering you can get other brands and no-name stuff for under $50 but I'd spend the $$ again for this, it's that good! Just Google the name and check out the reviews, most that I read were very positive.
I also tried on the Nike softshell pictured below and should have bought it then. It's a nice one also.
(Prices listed were MSRP at the time I was saving these pics a year or two ago.)

Columbia Men's Full Magnitude Vertex Softshell $160Cdn. This jacket is nice but the thing I don't like about it, and the reason I don't wear it much is that the body is lined but the zip off sleeves are not. As a result your arms and in my case shoulders start to feel cold after a while. I like that it has pit zips for cooling off though. The hood is also removeable.

The North Face Apex Bionic (similar to the Easyrider but doesn't have the warm fleece lining on the inside so I tend to layer with a softer fleece under it.

Nike Men's Thermal Zoned Full Zip Jacket $89US

If you are looking to get a really good deal, sign up for the sierratradingpost.com newsletter. They pretty much constantly have a coupon for their members(membership is free). I just bought a set of Marmot Precip rainwear for about half of what a normal retailer sells it for. For the price of just the rain jacket at any other online store, I got the jacket and pants. It's not uncommon for them to offer 30% off their already lower-than-average prices.

If you do buy something from them, be sure to add a pair or two of wool socks to your order. It's not uncommon to get smartwool socks for about $5 a pair with their coupon
