Affordable, portable light box for taking photos from Kickstarter

I think you've sort of missed the point here.
There is nothing that says you need to use a cell phone with this lightbox. It is just one of their "selling points" that it can make cell phone pictures look better quality.
I've seen the thread you linked to with the DIY lightbox, and that is perfect for someone wanting a home lightbox like that and wants to spend around $75. The one I shared is an actual portable alternative to typical lightboxes.
The one on kickstarter could be collapsed and stored in a desk drawer and popped open in seconds, I think that would appeal to many. That's why I backed it and shared it here.

Guess I did miss the point. Sorry for not following along better. ;)

Well, there's very little that one could do to actually make cell phone pics look worse. :D

Most of the $75 is for light bulbs and light fixtures, which you also have to buy to accompany the light box featured at Kickstarter. Or you could take it outdoors and use with natural light, as you could with any other light box too.

That is a valid selling point. But still, most light boxes already on the market also fold flat or disassemble.

Also, since the "Folio" is built out of opaque material, it fails to function as a light box should, with diffused lighting from the rear, top, and/or sides, as desired. Google "light tent" for examples.

The "Folio" folding design is interesting. Just not sure why they didn't choose to make it out of stiff, hinged, translucent plastic.

There is a difference between a cell phone with a garbage camera, and someone that doesn't know the first thing about using a good camera in a cell phone. I've taken some really good pictures of knives and other stuff using various cell cameras. They don't look like DSLR quality with extensive editing, but they look good. I see a lot of "sorry for the crappy cell pictures" type pictures posted, but the camera is on a newer Droid or iPhone. Some quick adjusting is all you need, understanding of how flash is meant to be used, the power of natural light, focus and background.

This product looks great for those folks with crappy pics. But then again, if folks are too lazy to take good pictures outside then they might be too lazy to bust this thing out. Looks cool though.
