I also get mirror finish with my Edge Pro Apex, The problem is that the knives are not that sharp...Having a hard time holding the blades correct....or???

thanks unit .from a true xpert as yourself that makes me feel good. freede sounds like you are'nt getting the 2 bevels to intersect correctly. it's necessary to form the burrs to make sure the edge is getting fine enough.

If you are getting th edges to burr, you may be rounding the edges with too much pressure once you get to the fine stones and polishing tape.

Another possibility is that the stones are different widths, meaning that once you move to a finer stone, you are no longer hitting the very edge even if the edge itself shows a perfect mirror.

Noctis and singularity got it.

Make sure you ease up on the pressure too, and raise a burr (however small) at each step.

Dennis, fine edges. I can't wait for my DMT extra-extra fine stone to get in myself.

wong ki i have the ultra fine bench stone by spydie. i do,nt know if they make a finer grit.
So-Lo posted a video recently showing how he could free hand a sucession of grits ending with the x-fine spydie to make a mirror edge that was as sharp as any i've seem made on the forum.my hand & eye are not good enough to accomplish what So-Lo did but he showed it was possible to do by hand the same results that the edge pro could achive.

Those look great! Congratulations!

I found the EP not only gave me great edges, but also taught me a LOT about sharpening, and this has also helped my freehand skills as well.

Dennis:

I saw So-Lo's vid-great stuff!

I'm still clamp bound as of now, but I'm practicing freehand on an Opie.

That is a tough one...Deciding if 2 knives are same sharpness. I think at some point is stops mattering (if you can whittle hair, does it really matter if another edge is sharper?).

Spyderco UF is easily capable of whittling hair free hand, but perhaps the edge polished on a jig is actually sharper, but we lack the ability to test the differences (I suspect this may be the case)...On the other hand if the edge looks like a mirror, whittles a hair, and looses this ability (along with any differences between the two levels of sharpness) after 2-3 cuts...what difference does it make?

It is fantastic to see someone achieve the results they want (that they previously could not). Congratulations! You have a nice piece of equipment there, and it certainly appears you have developed the talents for using it effectively.

thanks guys for the encouragement. unit [ken[ has a great video of his edge whittlin a hair.ken free hands on the ultra fine spydie hone then slices a hair like he's making a fuzz stick. i ca'nt imagine needing an edge any shaper, & as unit comments fine edges lacking durability have little practical advantages.as he points out edges this fine are difficult to discern if one is sharper than another. certainly this requires mechanics available only in laboratories. ankerson will be performing some rope cutting tests soon with some polished edges which should be revealing as to durability of fine bevels in harsh mediums. thanks for the input guys.
