Hey everybody,

Just wanted to share my good news. After 26 years, i've finally got my first job ever. It's a big thing for me since everyone seems to have gotten a job much much earlier but i've been spending my time studying and travelling with the family that i've never needed to get a job.

Last week on Thursday i finally got the offer. On saturday they put me to work straight away. Basically i'm working as a trainee consultant for a company which does fire investigations. So all we do is investigate and find out what caused the fire. Over here in Malaysia sometimes the fire department get it wrong and that's why insurance companies still need independent companies to investigate.

It was a hot day on saturday and i had to investigate a picture frame factory which burned down. I even had to learn how to interview people.

Anyway, it's a great feeling finally being able to tell people what i do for a living. I have no idea what the pay is gonna be like and there's loads of travelling around involved. Plus i have to work on public holidays like tomorrow. It sucks but a job is a job and i think after 26 years of leeching of my parents i need to suffer a bit.

Excellent news! All of those years watching CSI have finally paid off! ;)

Re interview technique: The best advice I ever got was from a veteran sergeant, who told me, "Suspect everyone; believe ****-all."

Congrats on the new job. Work sucks, but at least you found something interesting, and traveling will be a bonus. I'd slash my wrists if I had to sit in an office all day talking on the phone and pushing papers around!

Next step, get your own transportation and your own place to live, if you don't already.

Good Luck,
Bob

Congratulations!!! most people in the US get their first job at 12. So do you work with any hot chicks?

Fire investigation? That could be fascinating! Excellent variety. Field work. Mentally challenging. Lots of money involved. Good opportunity for career advancement. Can't be off-shored. And you may even get to use a knife from time to time! I'dsay you scored! Work hard and be the best you can be. And don't get involved in the dark side of office politics. Nobody likes a complainer. And always remember: what's good for your boss is good for you be definition. Try to develop a reputation as a reliable, friendly, enthusiastic, can-do, go-to, cuts-through-the-crap-and-gets-the-job-done employee; everone likes those people. Dress, act, and speak professionally. Try to solve at least ten problems for every problem you create. And office romances are never a good idea.

That sounds like a fantastic first job!! Congrats!! I would love a job like that.

I think the only hot chicks our new fire investigator is interested in are his wife and daughter! :D

Congratulations on a great start in the working world.

Our new investigator won't meet any hot chicks, because he'd have to put them out. All those bandages and stuff are hell for the lovelife.

Cheers and congrats. To Gollnicks advice I can only add something that turned my working life around. Bosses don't like people who keep coming up with problems, they like people who keep coming up with solutions.

Congrats! Sounds like a great career opportunity. You're lucky to have already received some excellent advice. Success to you.

Oh, is that what I've been doing wrong? For the last 17 years, I've wondered why my wife has been angry! ;) Now I know!

BTW, Point44, congrats on the 1st job. Since you've never worked, it will be quite a change for you. Working is a good and honorable thing. Providing for one's family and/or contributing for expenses one has incurred, is the right thing to do. And for me, I'd go nuts if I wasn't working. I've just assumed the duties as general manager of a franchise chain and am quite excited.

Whoa!? 26 years? You are one lucky guy to be able to do what you want and learn a great deal through all that time. Makes me wish I was that lucky ("sigh").

Anyway, congrats as well and as someone said already; WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!

Well done. Point44. I hope that your new job can be something that you love, so that you can look forward to going to work.

Nah, forget that - everything else Gollnick said was sage-like in it's wisdom. But ask any guy his greatest regret and he'll list all the chicks he could have shagged but didn't. Go hard young man!

Ps: Congratulations.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I am still enjoying the job but i hope i'm not stuck in the field all the time. It's gonna be tiring staying in the sun. I'm all sunburned today.

Max. otter: Yeah, we've been interviewing and my boss told me that most of 'em are not telling the truth.

Gollnick: You're right in that i can start using my gadgets. Haven't used my knife but used my leatherman and my Surefire L4 today.

untamed: I've managed to stay off work by staying with my parents and having them pay for me. HAHAHA. I've been a spoilt brat. In return i drive my mom around and do chores. So hopefully when i get my first paycheck i can get something nice for them.

However, i have no idea on what sort of pay i'm gonna get yet. Currently, since i don't have any job experience i'm not really expecting much. I just want the experience and i know i'll be learning a lot 'cos the principal consultant is a really experienced investigator from australia.

About girls in the office...well, esav is right in that the only girls i think of nowadays is my wife and kid. I even call my wife up to ask her to put the phone to the baby so that i can hear her. It's the first time i've been away from the baby since she was born 4 months ago.

I think that's a great attitude to have. (at least as long as you can afford it ;) )

When I still ran my advertising agency, I also taught radio and television scriptwriting at a local college for 7 years, just to give something back to the industry. The first question in the first class each year was always, "How much money am I going to make?"

Congratulations on the new job! As always, Mr. Gollnick's advice is succinct and right on the money. The only thing I could add is - no one ever got fired for working hard or being punctual. ;)
