Started two knifes today, The full tang bowie that I need the handle material for and another bushcraft knife for a friend.

The silver line is where the guard will be on the bowie and the black is where I plan to have the handle on the bushy. They are only cut out and roughly profiled with a 40 grit belt. Tomorrow I will clean up the profiles, descale the bowie, and layout my grind lines. If everything goes well I may even get the grind on one of them started. It all depends on how much sanding it takes to get to nice fresh, smooth metal. I really wish I had this up and running for the job:(

All I need is my VFD and to clean up the mess in the room from converting it to my mini shop. I know its no Nick Wheeler shop, but how many are that clean:p

So I was up late last night taking off the scale from the 5160 and doing a little bit of layout on the two blades. I think this may be the last time I work with 5160 till I get a surface grinder or start forging:grumpy: Even though the knife is going to be a full flat grind it just takes too much effort to get the scale off and smooth out the steel.

I still have a bit of touch up to do on the profile, but its easier to see once the scale is gone. I need to get rid of the hump going into the clip so it is a nice flowing clip, and I need to work on the rounded area under the ricasso. the plunge line will be about half way on the curve.

O-1 on the other hand is a dream to work with:thumbup: Cut it out, profile it, layout the lines and its ready to go. I still haven't decided to go with a scandi or convex grind, but I am leaning towards the scandi, the grind lines just seem to suit the shape of the blade better.

I have the scales cut out and roughly shaped to the tang already, just so I could get a better visual on the plunge and grind lines

Well back to work now:thumbup:

Is the bushy out of 1/8" stock? I typically like high, flat grinds but I prefer scandi grinds on my bushies, so that would be my vote. Nice classy style, I hope you keep posting progress pics! What all do you have planned for the bowie?

the bushy is going to a friend as a engagement present. I talked it over with him before I ordered the steel and he wanted something he could beat on so it 3/16" O-1. I brought it over to him yesterday with the roughed out scales on it to get an idea of where to put the palm swell in the scales and we decided on a high flat grind.

I roughed in the grind after that, but had a little slip on the crappy 30X1 grinder I have and put a nice groove on one side at the plunge line:( so I now need to narrow it up by about a 1/32 per side to get rid of the mistake so it will be right around the 1/8" when I am done.

The bowie is getting a nice set of Walnut scales with brass/copper mosaic pins. The guard and pommel are going to be the same steel, 5160, and have brass and copper spacers. I was going to have the pommel engraved, but it looks like the price is just a bit out of range for what I am selling that one for. It will have a high or full flat grind on it as well. It is going to a coworker, bike mechanic, and the pommel nut is a chain ring bolt. It turns out that the inside of the bolt it the exact drill tap size for 10-24:thumbup:
