aftermarket ball cage disabled knife

I was dropping the knife on it's head (closed) from a few inches or so... I was inebriated (happens a few times a year), there is no explanation, don't ask

I noticed the lock didn't go all the way back. Played with it, it got worse and then disabled the knife. I tried to pry it open like a monkey would, no go.

Turns out the rod on the ball cage broke off from the cage part. Or maybe it was bent, can't remember.

I could not believe this happened, racked my brain for several hours... Kept thinking about all the people I didn't believe who say their omega springs broke

That type of cage has the rod screw into the cage...

Reasons for breaking:

a.) I didn't screw it in all the way when I installed it and it eventually unscrewed after 2 years.
b.) I damaged it when I installed it. (It was my first time with the Manix)
c.) It just unscrewed naturally.

The replacement didnt' have a rod that screws in. (or it was really tight?)

Glad I had a backup!

To be clear: this was all my fault

Ain’t nothing wrong with the factory cages. Plus, they don’t break.

Nevertakeadayoff, this is an opportunity for you to R&R the knife with a new one! You shouldn’t let opportunities like this slip awaySince now you select any Spyderco knife that tickles your fancy!

I refuse to use a knife that has plastic. The other cages I bought don't have a removable stem, so this event is impossible to reoccur.

D DavidABQ The knife is doing just fine with the replacement cage : ) It took me a couple months of browsing and research to move away from Benchmade to Spyderco. As far as I can tell, the Manix 2 will be my EDC for many years. It satisfies several essential requirements of mine that most knives cannot. I do not carry any other folder! : )

1–Reason for breaking : intoxicated. 2-refuse to use knife that has plastic ? Refuse to use knives while intoxicated 🤣

The jokes were inevitable, but I am interested in the mechanical failure itself. Got photos?

R ricklikesknives you didn't get enough credit for that, hilarious, ty

It will not thread. Looks like it got jammed. What would push the stem into the cage? I have no explanation.

Sorry for the crapy pics, I was lazy and took that pic in the dark with my red flashlight lol

Is this from a Flytanium Ti cage ? Didn't think they were built with two pieces ....
