Does anyone know of an off the rack nylon sheath that'll fit a BK9? I can't seem to find anything in the Spec-Ops style that comes larger than 8".

I've thought about a full on kydex job and have no doubt that yours would be excellent Eric. But there is something that makes me pause on that kind of setup for this knife, and perhaps you could offer your thoughts on it based on your experience making sheaths.

There's always a time when using the BK9 that I need to sheath it temporarily so I can use both hands. If the knife has dirt, sand, little wood fragments, sap, or any other kind of debris on it I will usually want to quickly wipe off any excess I can so as to minimize what might end up inside the sheath. Chances are there will still be something on the knife though. On a nylon sheath with plastic liner there is some more spare room around the blade which could allow whatever is on the blade the chance not to get stuck and smeared on the inside of the sheath. With an all kydex rig that would have tighter tolerance all around the blade I tend to think I'm going to end up spending as much time time cleaning out the sheath as I do cleaning up the blade after the work is done.

Am I overthinking this?

Hey Juji

Do I think you're over thinking it...?

No..not really. One must feel comfortable with what one uses and relies on...

Personally in my experience, with this type of thing, it generally doesn't concern me in the least....

My main bush knife is a Busse Battle Mistress E, and has been for the last 7-8 years.Up until recently I've used the same sheath (one of my sheaths)since I bought the knife.

Now I don't usually make a habit of re-sheathing a filthy knife,, but for the most part,, unless the knife is covered in blood guts or dirt, I wipe the blade off best I can and re-sheath it...

Although at times for whatever reason I have put away a very dirty knife.. There have been times were there was no place to clean the knife after gutting a bear or deer and wiping it onto a $500 Scent Lok suit isn't an option,,so the knife gets re-sheathed however it is...

I'm less concerned with the appearance of the knife as far as scratches or what not.. It's a bush knife that gets used, gets scratched and gets filthy constantly...

As long as it doesn't effect the knife Functionally, I could care less.

I Can't remember if I've ever even washed out that sheath, and as long as the outside was clean for Appearance sake and there was nothing hindering the function of the sheath, it doesn't usually even cross my mind...

I wear my sheaths with various knives daily.. I wash out a sheath rarely if ever,,unless there is a problem.

What I am Most concerned about is Function and Reliability..

My sheaths Function the way I want them to..I make them to standards that I use and the situations, roles I put them into...

They may or May not work for everyone, however in my experience and from my client base's experience they work well and I have little to no complaints,, nor returns due to problems encountered...

As for the Stock sheaths that come with the Beckers,,keeping in mind that I have seen countless different examples of All kinds of sheaths both nylon and kydex, that they are an OK sheath.. not the best I have seen,, but Certainly not the worst either...

I consider them Run of the mill however are a well functioning sheath..

Would I change things about them.. Yes absolutely,, however they are what they are,, and if they work for most people then Cool..

However they don't work for me or I'd be making a similar sheath ,however using My standards of what I Think a sheath should be... Again,, not something that everyone would like,,but work to my standards...

I think that if these problems you have with a pure kydex sheath truly bother you,, then you Shouldn't Compromise your standards,, just because I don't have a problem with them, or tell you it's No Big Deal...

Again you have to use what YOU feel works for you...

There are many reasons I don't like them and won't use that type of sheath,,however it is my personal preferences and yes some biased views for obvious reasons..

I assure you though,, it may be less of a Functional problem you see but rather an Appearance problem you have with what I'm guessing is a Brand new knife...

I say use the knife for what it was intended to do and the problems you may or may not be perceiving will be less of a problem than you actually thought...

If you have a problem you want solved,, Seek out a possible solution and do what works for you...

Any Questions or help I can be to you, please drop me a note....

Thanks for your response Eric, I appreciate the thoughts.

My Becker is neither new nor pristine in its appearance so, aside from the general rule of keeping knives clean after using them, it's not a matter of how good or bad it looks. I agree that function and reliability are the more important factors. One reason I'm looking around for something to replace the original sheath is that I think its reliability will be less over the long haul compared to something of better build quality. I guess when it comes to the knife that sees the most outdoor use and gets dirty in the process I was stuck on the idea that a tighter fitting kydex sheath might have an appreciable difference in the matter of retaining foreign matter.
