Aftermarket scales for BM Mini-AFCK?

hi all,

i haven't been actively reading/posting much in the forums since my collection of knives was stolen a good 1.5 years ago, but anyway, here i am again.

i recall a long long time ago (ok, maybe not that long), i saw some posts/pictures of BM AFCKs and Mini-AFCKS with customized scales...at the time i only saw wood ones (which i'm not terribly interested in). anyhow i recently acquired a used BM Mini-AFCK (for nostalgia purposes) and it appears to have seen its fair share of usage. the G10 scales are pretty beat up, and the blade is showing signs on rust/i don't know how to explain what this is type of stuff. as the liner and the blade are in good condition and i don't see myself needing BM warranty anytime soon, i figured i'd replace the scales, if possible, with something either more attractive or newer. anyone know where i can find some custom scales for my mini-afck? i'd prefer something like carbon fiber, but anything other than this beat up G10 will do actually.

i'd also like to polish the blade, but have NEVER EVER customized ANY of my knives in any way beyond adjusting tension and removing/relocating clips, so this isn't exactly my strong suit. since college admissions are over and i have tons of free time i thought i'd endeavor to make my beat up mini-afck attractive. anyone know where i can find a good tutorial on how to high polish or at least clean up the satin-finished ats-34 blade, if it's possible? thanks guys!

I'm probably as poor a person to answer this as could be found, but it warrants some sort of response.

First, welcome back. I'm pretty new, but a frequent poster. Terrible to hear about your loft by theft. I was burglarized once. Lost what I now know to be a great example of Rudy Ruana's work, that my Dad bought in 1947 for $5. He'd done the heirloom thing with me, and I lost it. Felt terrible. Think I'd be closer to a murderous rage were some scoflaw to now take what I've collected.

I suggest you try the Benchmade forum for possible ready-made custom scales for your mini. Other than that, there are many knife making supply outfits that sell blanks. It would certainly be the cheapest for you to make them yourself, using blanks.

Run a search here on customize/customizing. A fellow named Frank Recuperero is regarded as the best by many forumites. He doesn't come cheap. This forum was recently archived so would suggest you check in at least the first archive.

So far as polishing blades, am sure there are threads on that. In general, I recall advice like taking knife apart -- which voids many warranties -- making some sort of wooden thing to use to avoid cutting yourself, and sanding it to a fare-thee-well.

Hopefully other forumites can give you much more specific advice. In the interim, think you best bet is the BM forum and the search feature.

Good luck,
