"Aftermath" - what does it means?

Hello!
Somebody knows, what does "Aftermath" means? My brother has this great knife and very interested in word meaning. I didn`t find this word in vocabulary (I have the Russian English vocabulary )

I believe it means последствие

Just kidding. I have no idea if that's a good translation. The link in the post above this should help. Basically it is a word used to describe the situation that exists in the wake of some disaster or catastrophe.

Example: Thousands were left homeless in the aftermath of the Hurricane.

It's one of those words in English that has an ominous resonance and I'm sure it is due to this, and not any literal definition that the knife was given this name.
