Unsuccessful today, but Oh Well ! Least I got out and had a look
Six point or better open season which is a tough hunt anyway but you never know.
The area that is open includes my trapping territory so I have intimate knowledge of the animal trails and movement patterns season to season.
A pal and I walked into an area that showed good sign
Tried some sitting and cow calling.Nothing was on for us today
Some pictures

The water, still running a little dirty from the rains we have had for the last little while

Walked by this and couldnt resist.Didnt take any pictures but with a little shredding it took a spark from the firesteel.Started the lunch fire for our tea

Yours truly- my rifle is a 1951 270 model 70 Winchester fuelled by some sweet handloads
.Today was a warm one as you can see

Nice pics Dan, i also use a 1951 winchester model 70 standard grade 30-06. I had a 1949 supergrade 270 but unfortunately sold it.
The old pre-64's are sweet guns for sure. Well good luck with your hunting and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the pics. I am slated to go to Montana in Late October for Elk and Mullies. Getting the itch for the mountains....

i'm surprised it's that warm up there. i remember a hunt in colorado at 9200 ft. did'nt drop lower than the mid 40s. warm weather sure makes hunting tuff. thanks for the pics

Nice pics and beautiful country. As a hunter, you know that a successful hunt does not always equate to simply bagging game. Enjoy your time.

Very Nice.

Anytime you see the game your after its a successful hunt.

Anytime you see something you wouldn't have seen sitting at home its a fun hunt :)

Well elk season came and went.No luck for me.Which I thought would be a sure thing as I said Im quite familiar with the area.Thought it was only a matter of time.So much for thinking like that
I did have a few hectic monents though and did get close.Had bulls bugling on a few evenings.Interstingyly nothing vocal early morning.
One bull sounded off quite close but kept stepping off further and further from me until it eventually got dark

Ah well there is still an immature moose season until the end of the month.
Then ratty rutting mulies-much fun though

dan if a trapper ca'nt bag an elk that is tuff hunting. may i mention trappers are not only some of our most hardy outdoorsmen but know the ground almost as well as a native american. i always thought if abdomible snow people or any other other legends existed the trapper would authenticate their existance

dboles, what bullet do you use in the .270 for elk? Jack O'Connor always liked the heavy for caliber Nosler Partitions, but there are so many good ones out there now. Fill us in!

Thanks DenisStrickland for the kind words
Nothing is a gimme in hunting I had learned that years ago shoulda known better.
We did hunt hard and I do know that country side.Had a great time, good food, little drink lots of BS with friends and family
black mamba was much interested in OConnor, liked his writing style, adventures and some advise.
I do own a few rifles and handload for all
The load pictured is a 150grain Sierra boattail spitzer shoved along by 50 grains even of IMR4350.Something a friend and I had worked up and the gun likes. This was the only bullet that the store I deal at had at the time-joys of small town shopping
Took a moose with this load last fall.
My buddy switched to Barnes X copper( cant remember exact bullet name) and seeing the results he has been getting and bullet weight retention on recovered bullets.Im thinking of giving those a try
