AG DM-1 steel?

Is there another, better known steel out there that DM-1 compares to? Seems to be something only AG Russell uses.

IIRC correctly, when they first came out with the "Sandbox Bowie", there was some discussion about it, and it's very similar to the old Cold Cteel "Carbon V" and Case's "CV".

The new "Sandbox Hunter" kinda has my interest.

Dan Margiani was the one that had the steel tweaked and developed the heat treat routine just for it way back when. He is one of the legends in the industry that mostly insiders know about. It's fitting that A.G. Russell called the steel after him as that steel's performance was mostly due to the heat treat he developed. The old "carbon V" knives still are valued and don't last long on the BS&T forums.

I heard that steel goes back to the Camillus Bankruptcy sale. I don't know if that's true though.
Time line from Paul Tsujimoto, currently Sr. Engineer at KA-BAR

Here is the correct time line:

1) Cold Steel Carbon V was first produced in the Alcas Factory (Cutco and KA-BAR) Mid 1980s, Carbon V was originally 1095CV/0170-06/50100B.

2) Cold Steel moved to Ontario early 1990s. Carbon V started out as 1095CV/0170-06/50100B but while at Ontario, Dan Maragni removed the small amount of nickel from the formula.

3) Cold Steel moved to Camillus approx. 1995. Carbon V stayed 0170-06 minus the nickel.

Here is the chemistry for Sharon Steel 0170-06 (From Sharon Steel ref.book)

C: 0.95-1.10; Mn:0.30-0.50; P:0.025max; S: 0.025max; Si:0.15-0.25; Cr:0.40-0.60; Ni:0.25; Mo:0.06; V:0.15-0.25.

This is also the formula for KA-BAR's 1095CV. .

Thanks guys.
I went by and picked up the sandbox hunter and a rat-5 and compared the 2. The blade shape, blade width, grind, and overall dimensions are quite similar. The handle thickness and contours on the sandbox hunter were much better IMO. The blade thickness on the sandbox hunter is listed at just over an 1/8", I believe the rat-5 is just over 3/16" the rat-5 felt much heavier & actually a bit clunky in comparison. May have to put it on the list of needs...

The steel was purchased by A.G. at the Camillus auction.
Dan Maragni oversees the Heat Treat of all A.G.'s DM-1 blades.

Thanks Phil. Seems like I should have known that.
