I recently found an older AG Russell CM-5 with the 44-mag badge. I know the blades are stainless steel and that the knife was made by hen & rooster for AG Russell.

What I'm trying to find out is what type of stainless it is. I know AG Russell has used various steels for knives made for him. My best guess is that it's the standard steel in most hen and rooster knives which I believe is a 440A from the best I have been able to find.

I would appreciate it anyone can help me learn more about the knife as well as it looks like a nice piece to add to my growing collection of whittlers.

A.G. Russell is a member on this forum. I suggest contacting him by PM or maybe just give him a call at the Contact number on his website. It's been my experience that he loves to talk about the Hen & Rooster knives that were made under his ownership, and rightfully so.

He would likely appreciate the call.

Is there a way to look up forum members? The only way I've found member's pages is by clicking on their username from a thread.

Just thought I would share the information I was given from customer service at AG Russell's website. They were very helpful, and I scored some other nice used AG Russells in a bundle of knifes in an auction. Threw a few away of the bundle but he brute and lockback in chinese quince with ATS-34 are nice for sure especially for the song I found them for.

"Your A.G. Russell knife is a CM-5 .44 magnum whittler, which was made in Germany in 1977. A.G. owned the little Hen & Rooster company in Germany at that time. He owned it from 1975-1980. During that time, he made a lot of knives under the A.G. Russell name and the Hen & Rooster name. They were very high quality for manufactured knives. 1200 CM-5 knives were made. There should be a serial number on your knife. The blade steel was just known as German steel. It was a high carbon stainless steel. The bolsters and liners are nickel silver and the handle scales are ebony wood. The bullet shield in the handle is also nickel silver. It’s a very nice design and knife."

Pictures because every thread looks better with pictures (and because I want to show off the recent finds).

Very cool. Those are all fine looking knives. The transition from backspring to blade on that Micarta lockback looks almost invisible. Good stuff.
