AG Russell Deer Hunter

I havent no, But that looks like a nice compromise for my MAster Hunter fix, and I still get it in carbon.

Yes, very nice small utility knife. I find the handle a bit cramped for extended heavy cutting, but for light to medium precision work it is excellent. More details in the reviews.

Wow, hi Cliff! I haven't seen you around much lately. Perhaps I'm not visiting the right forums. I hope all is well with you.

I have always read good things about the AG Russell Deer Hunter. It is a basic design available in several different steels. A pretty good value in a 4" production piece these days.

Always, yeah the DH was at one time one of, if not the most popular small utility/camp knife on the forums. Lately Bark River has really come into that niche, but the DH is still very solid. I like the sheath a lot as well.

MORE details in the review? How about MUCH MORE details in the review. I applaud you Cliff for doing such a fine review on a knife that is surly a keeper in my book. Thanks.

I used to have one but lost it in the woods. It was AUS8, the only steel offered at the time. It was a wonderful knife with its thin blade and flat grind all the way from edge to the spine. The handle was comfortable and secure for me. Like Cliff says, it's a good precision cutter and not heavy duty. I never used it for prying or batonning.

The sheath is acutally a hard scabbard, impenetrable to the contained blade in normal use. It holds the knife secure but a press of the thumb while removing the knife provides instant access. It's a breeze once you get used to it.

If I get a replacement it will be in D2 steel which should be even better.

I had one in D2. The design is superb, but I must have had a dud heat treat.

The D2 blade just wouldn't hold an edge, I thought D2 sucked until I tried one of Bob Dozier's Skinners -and that made me a believer.

I've sold my Deer Hunter now, but wish I had it rockwell tested. It really did not seem like HRC 60-61. Now I'm a maker, I've made many D2 knives and had them hardened to HRC 60-61 by Paul Bos and they would all outcut the D2 Deerhunter I had.

The Deer Hunter seems to be a great knife. Mine is a First Production Run so I haven't used it. But it's well made and a good design. I especially like the hard locking sheath with the thumb release.

I do EDC the Hunters Scalpel, a small utility knife with the same construction and sheath design.

The Bird and Trout is also a great knife. For me, since I don't actually clean large game, the B&T is a more practical size with the same materials, design, and sheath.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

This might be helpful, a comparison photo with a ruler of the Deer Hunter, Bird and Trout, and Hunters Scalpel.

The Hunters Scalpel is not currently offered at the AG Russell website; I hope it hasn't been permanently discontinued - it's a great little knife and my EDC.
