I was looking through the latest AG Russell catalog and saw the for billionth time but really looked for the first time the Deer hunter and Bird and trout knives and both seem to be nice Japanese made knives in a variety of steels being D2, VG10 and AUS 8 my choice would be either D2 or VG10 or maybe both maybe the Deer Hunter in D2 and the B&T in VG10. But what this thread is about is if anyone has these knives and has any experience with the sheaths and just the knives themselves and I know being an AG Russell they are going to be some good quality but the catalog doesnt have any description on the sheath, The website has a description of the sheath but if anyone has any experience with the knife and the sheath then please grace me with your experience.

i have one in d2

sharp thin blade
should be great for skinning though i have used mine yet.

sheath is hard plastic with a button to release the knife

Thank you Dave I was thinking after I posted this that I could attach the large one to my back pack and the small one to my belt for camping along with a pocket knife and my Gerber Prodigy in the back pack itself (later to be upgraded to a RAT RC 4 or comparable fixed blade). I would attach the large one to the straps going across the shoulder straps on my backpack and secure the bottom of the sheath with some paracord, we will see how I like that when I get them or if I get them I do plan on ordering the large and small one in D2(large) and VG10(small).

I have 2 deer hunters, a bird and trout, and a hunters scalpel. I was actually going to post a tribute to this awesome A.G. Russell knife. The sheath and knife combination are an inspired design. The deer Hunter size is my favorite. I have the D2 and VG-10 steels, and they are very comparable. No noticeable difference in use. They are light and very handy. Great slicers as they are thin. The sheath is a very tough plastic, but does not feel cheap at all. As a lefty, this sheath works well for me. They feel great in the hand, and you can carry them in a lot of different ways. Even upside down! This is a knife /sheath combo, that DaVinci would have thought of, if he was as good as A.G. :D Get one or two, you will not be disappointed! A.G. guarantees it.:thumbup:

the sheath is made to the blade can not come out without pushing the button

although calling it a button may not be exactly the right name for it

here's a pic to give you an idea of the sheath

Good review here:

After watching Nutnfancy's review, I was convinced that I needed to pick up a Bird and Trout knife from AG Russell. I use mine around the kitchen mostly. Very light weight, and no problems with corrosion (Mine happens to be ATS-34; I suspect a VG10 version would be similar in terms of corrosion resistance). Quality knife and a quality sheath, and it's backed by one of the best warranties out there. Not the cheapest knife around, but in this case, you get what you pay for. Cheers.

Cool guys I am watching the Nutnfancy vid right now and keep these comments coming guys this sounds like a really great knife.

Oh and I am familiar kind of with VG 10 but how rust resistent is it compared to say S30v or 154CM (both CPM and standard 154CM)

I have a deer hunter in ATS-34. The blade as people already said is thin and very good for slicing. The sheath is also of good quality and the knife will not fall down even if held upside down -- it is a nice feature that I like very much, it gives you many carry options. The whole package is light, ideal for hunting and camping.

In case you were wondering the difference in sizes between the three (Hunters Scalpel, Bird and Trout, and Deer Hunter), here's a comparison scan with ruler.

(The Hunters Scalpel shown in this image is the old discontinued model. The new version is a tad longer.)

I've carried and used the old-style Hunters Scalpel for several years. Perfect little knife for around the drill rig, on the motorcycle, or hiking or backpacking. I have no experience actually using the two larger models, but the Bird and Trout fits my hand just right.

Wow reading my first post on the top I must sound like I am kind of "special" it was late at night and I was tired so there is my excuse. :)
