I am thinking of buying an AG russell knife that the following link will show you. I am also considering their field sharpener. http://www.agrussell.com/agrussell/rus-pa-br.html
The sharpener is item AG3750 and the following link describes it: http://www.agrussell.com/maintenance/index.html
They say that with the field sharpener one just holds the knife so that the edge is down and thenslide edge across the ceramic or diamond rod. I asked what if the knife has a different angle to start with and the lady said that it does not matter. This confused me. I thought that if one were working with say an Arkansas stone one would want to maintain the same angle that the blade originally had. I would use this knife for skinning and dismembering big game animals in the field. Any thoughts or comments? Thanks, Rufous.

Mate, When it comes to A.G. Russells you can rest assured that
what they sell will do what they say or they will take it back. Now
or anytime you become unhappy with your purchase. Believe it.

So go ahead and take the plunge you won't really know if it'll
work fo you until YOU try it no matter what you may read here.

Russell's is first rate :) :)

A.G.R. products are high quality, but yes, of course it matters if you really want to retain the same bevel. Now having said this, it isn't something absolutely necessary to do, and not always the best thing to do anyway. The problem with sharpeners like that one is that you can not vary the angle, but once your knife is reprofiled to the angle of the rods, they will get and keep it very very sharp. You will notice this right away if the rod angle is greater than the factory angle, but it will take a longer time to reprofile the edge if the rod angle is set lower than the factory edge...

Hi matthew.
I dont know who you maight have talked to up there, but they are right...to a degree.

The field sharpener is set to a 15 degree angle,IIRC. If your blade is at say,20 degrees, you just use the diamond rods, and work with it,then finish with the finer ones.

Go ahead and order it,trust me, your satisfaction is guaranteed. Any problems at all, call 800-255-9034 and ask for robert.
