This knife seems to get uniformly rave reviews and although pricey, today I didn't buy a Buck 110 and a Schrade old timer stockman that I was thinking about, so I "saved" 50 bucks ;) I've been trying to curb my knife buying enthusiasm and buy fewer knives, but of a higher quality.

I'm looking for a traditional looking EDC and like the scout style (don't like to be without a knife and a bottle opener so it kills two birds, etc)

It looks a little big and bulky for EDC, so I was looking for comments on that. I generally wear a suit, but don't need a real small gentleman's knife.

The A.G. Russell Premium Scout Knife is one terrific-looking and wonderfully built knife. I recommend it highly. But if the relative bulkiness of the knife is a problem and you insist on a bottle opener, why not a Victorinox Soldier--and at less than one third the cost? The Vic's alox handles sure are nice.

I'm definately looking for comments on the relative bulkiness of the knife. I haven't been able to handle one, only saw it in the catalog. I don't know if its bulky compared to say, my Dad's old 2 bladed barlow, which is quite small in the pocket, or if its bulky like a Buck 110, which is too big for me to comfortably pocket carry.

I like the looks of the Victorinox too. I've got a couple of the plain red plastic scaled ones and they are great. Just considering a little "luxury" in my life. ;)

When(not if) I finally get one of these A.G. Russell Premium Scout knives, I will be carrying it on my belt in a custom leather sheath. It just seems much too bulky for everyday pocket carry.

It's twice as bulky as your Dad's Barlow. It's half as bulky as a Buck 110. I could carry one just fine in a jeans pocket, but not in a suit pocket.

It's an excellent knife but agree with th others that it is bulky. It's the same size and weight of the Camilllus Boy Scout knife. I recommend handling one before you invest $100 to make sure it will meet you needs.

If it's just a nice scout knife your looking for, ebay always has a good selection of vintage scouts from Kabar, Camillus, Case and others. I paid $15 for my 84 Case knife and it's as new. I think the reason there are so many listed for sale is because they really are too bulky and heavy to carry!

My favorite "scout" style knife is the Vic Soldier. For under $15 (at Target), it's the best deal going!

If you are looking for a luxury I suggest Queen Cutlery and Schatt & Morgan products. I'm suspecting that Queen makes the Premium Scout for AG Russell.

Another vote for the V-nox Soldier, or the Spartan. Both carry very well in the pocket.

Actually, I think it's a touch thicker and heavier than the current Cam Scout. However, it is dead-on the same as the old bone-handled Scouts. I wouldn't say it's bulky, I'd say it's built pretty strong. :)

I'd bet that Camillus makes the Premium Scout for AG Russell. I have several Camillus Scouts and the AGR Premium and I've seen plenty of similarities in the blades and tools.

I dont think similarity in the tools is a criteria for evaluation of the maker. Every scout knife I've ever laid eyes on has similar tools, as does the USMC knife. The big variation is in the can opener, which changed about the time Remington quit making scout knives (the 40s I believe). Other than that, some have a long bottle opener/screwdriver, others short. I've seen Camillus models with both.

Mine is an Ulster, which is/was a Schrade line at one time. I think Ulster scout knives have been made by both Camillus and Schrade. The tipoff there is whether the bolsters are solid or the Schrade type. Mine are the Schrade type, so I know it is a Schrade/Ulster. It is identical in every other respect to the current Camillus made knife:

Oops I fibbed. All scout knives now are stainless. Mine is carbon. They have also lengthened the tang of the phillips screwdriver tool. Not identical in every respect.
