Hey folks,
I get the emails from AG Russell and wonder if anyone here is familiar with their Seconds that they are always offering. In particular, I’m interested in their Sunfish with the white bone handle. I would gladly pay the difference for a perfect knife with no blemishes, but they are out of stock and times being what they are...its hard to say when they will have them again. I am old with heart problems and terminal Pulmonary Fibrosis...so tend to buy knives and guns sooner rather than a later which may not be in the cards. LOL!
Anyway they describe their Seconds as having minor blemishes but otherwise fully functional and under their normal warranty. Has anyone here acquired on of their Seconds, and if so did the minor blemish jump out at you, or was it barely noticeable?
Thanks for any replies,
Cheers,
Citizen

I've bought a couple Russell seconds and could not find the "blemishes". Of course who knows what you might get. I'd take the chance. Are the still returnable?

Yes Rich5,
Backed by their amazing Customer Satisfaction Guarantee, which according to their website means
you can return a knife even after 10 years or more if you are no longer satisfied with it. I find that absolutely incredible. So I think I will go ahead and take the plunge.

i think you have to call to
purchase. so perhaps you can ask about the blemish(es) prior to purchasing?

You should! I have bought two or three of their "seconds" to check out a pattern and liked it so much I didn't buy the "perfect". They are very picky about their knives and what they sell and stand behind their product 110%.

I have bought a few traditionals from them and really, really like them. Just as good, the one time I had problems with a knife I purchased from them that was from the AGR branded line, they sent the replacement knife with the prepaid return package with no questions asked.

Buy it!

Just the fact the seconds are covered by their standard warranty is amazing. I hate how other companies offer seconds, say any blemish or reason for it being a second is strictly cosmetic and does not affect function.... but they are never covered by any warranty...even though warranties don't cover cosmetic stuff anyways as its normal wear and tear.

Maybe @Phil Gibbs would weigh in on your questions, I personally wouldn't hesitate to try a second from them. I've been buying knives from AG Russell since I was in my early teens and they've never let me down.

It really depends on whether you are buying for carry, or to collect/gift.

If it's a carry knife, go ahead.

If you want to gift it or show off as a collection piece, maybe not.

I've seen a couple of their factory seconds, but never saw the reasons for their 'second' status.

Buy it! If you find a flaw that you can't abide, send it back, but I'm betting you don't. And, if you request it, they will hand-pick a half dozen or so of whatever you're ordering, and send you the best looking specimen. Ya don't get that kind of service at Walmart!!

Are their seconds available on their website or do you have to sign up for the email?

Sold on this webpage: https://agrussell.com/knives/cat_id:130

But, if inventory is low, you may get a message requesting that you call before ordering to ensure there is adequate inventory.

FYI. From the AGR website above:
SECONDS
Our seconds are cosmetically imperfect knives that are fully functional and carry our Customer Satisfaction Guarantee. Each knife is marked with a notch on the lower edge of the ricasso

Got my eye on one or two of those 2nd's myself.

Yep, steelhead has a great point here. A company can rant on and on about how their "blems" are just as great as the "firsts", but you ain't getting warranty or return service on any of them. It's like the crackhead down the street that's selling his "runs great, no issues" 1987 Corolla as-is no takes-backs.

Grab one, then come back here and tell us if you find the "flaw". I've ordered many 2nds and have yet to find the bad spot.

AG Russell seconds are pretty good. Bought a couple recently. I looked them over hard. On one there is a very sight gap in the back. If had some skills that I lack, I probably could tighten it up. The other has a slight separation between wood and carbon fiber on the handle. I have seen other production makers where neither of these would make them seconds. For user items I would buy AG Russel seconds again.

My lovin wife ordered it for me last night! I really like the knife but my wife is a keeper for sure! Going on 37 years now!

I ordered a second from them (the sunfish in blue oak burl), it had a few pin cracks, but I returned it no problem and they sent another which had fewer pin cracks and was otherwise such a nice specimen of burl that I kept it. Outstanding customer service (and a great knife with impressive engineering). Takes a bit of effort to depress the lockback when closing the blade.
