Good evening folks!
Evidently, holidays ease my soul and push me towards spending money on knives....
Now, I'm curious about these two knives, and I was wondering what you think about them.sorather than resurrecting an old thread, I decided to start a new one.
I am well aware of AG Russell's reputation. I never bought a knife from him, but he did answer some emails with extreme kindness. I'm looking for personal opinions on these designs, since both catch my eye (although I would probably mod both patterns into single bladed version).
Aside from the upcoming Queen sowbelly, this pattern is basically unavailable in the 3,5"ish range, just like the dogleg trapper. Here are two pictures for reference:

Hi Fausto. I have no experience with either knife, but the dogleg with its VG-10 steel did previously catch my eye. Like you I wish it was available in a single blade version. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do.

They are an interesting and good looking knife.... especially the spey. I bought a Coral Rucarta Rancher recently, I was happy with the knife. I imagine I would be happy with these.

I have a Sowbelly and love it.
You will be very pleased with AGR, Fausto.

I have a number of AG traditional knives and I've been really impressed, especially at their price point. Unfortunately I don't have experience with the two your interested in.

I do have a sowbelly double blade trapper. The one critism I have is the relatively weak spring. Others on this forum have mentioned the same. Other than that, it's got outstanding F&F. Steel is 8cr, but seems to hold a decent edge and gets very sharp.

The only other AG slip joint I own is the Regular Jack. Beautiful jiged bone, 12C27 steel, nice sheild, interesting long pull / crescent nail nick. This one has decent spring strength.

In short, AG makes attractive slip joints, and I think you'll enjoy either.

AG slip joints in the wild:)

JOELSM, good looking Regular Jack. I emailed them recently about that exact knife and found out it had been discontinued. :(

That is a shame, because that's a seriously good-looking knife!

I'm usually drawn to stockman patterns, but I'm not sure about that spey blade. Not a deal breaker, but it looks sorta odd...what do others think?

Yes the spey blade on the sowbelly stockman does look a bit odd.
Yet, my plan is to eventually mod it into a single bladed version
Curiously, it seems there aren't many of these knives around here.

That's a shame! I thought I saw AG advertising a regular Jack in smooth bone just a couple weeks ago!?! It has outstanding walk and talk.

That spey blade does "look" odd, but may be real functional. If it were in VG10,or some other wear resistant steel, it might be a good little skinner. A skinning knife doesn't have to be big to be useful.

Not sure if you're set on the two choices outlined above, but there are single blade AG Sowbelly patterns: clip point or Wharncliffe. If you want a single blade those options may do the trick.

Yes, I am aware of the "other" sowbelly knives produced by AG Russell...cause I've been tempted when they came out
Yet, the one I posted looks much more like a "real", old fashioned sowbelly frame...which is rare to find, especially in that size range.
Thank you for your feedback folks :)

Yeah, they still have the smooth white bone version, but I don't like it nearly as much as that amber jigged bone. I emailed because they still show both online (with the amber listed as "sold out"), so I was hoping they'd be getting that one back in stock, but it's not going to happen.

I was also wanting feedback on the real sowbelly (stockman) and started a thread a while back. Nobody on the forum has posted feedback yet. I did see an auction with real photos. The photos weren't the best but I thought I'd share one of the photos in case it's helpful.

Thank you Jake. Too bad I didn't find your thread when I searched (although I know you like the sowbelly frame...and that's why we're both looking at the Queen/S&M catalog lately...or so I suppose :D).
Curiously, some knives seem to move on a different route and quite far from this subforum.
