Read a lot of good things here about that Sypderco sharpening system. I was wondering if anybody knows how it compares with the A.G. Russell field sharpener (p. 32 of Russell's "Late Fall 2003" Catalog)? They seem quite similar to me.

I use the AG Russell and like it very much. As for the Spyderco, I have not used one but only hear good things about them. A lot depends on the angle you like. The AG Russell uses a 30° included angle which is shallower than many knives have which requires more work the first time and thins the edge a little more. The Spyderco uses a 40° or a 30° depending on which holes you use. This would make the Spyderco a little more versatile in my opinion. It would also depend on if you like the round or triangular rods. I believe that either works fine and it would be a matter of personal preferance.

The field sharpener includes diamond rods for a very modest price. It facilitate working edges down to 15 degrees per side. It is also convenient to pack around.

The sharpmaker triangular rods allow you to sharpen a lot of the narrower modern serrations. I particularly like the edge finish that I get with the spyderco rods. The material is good and the flat sides of the triangular rods gives lower honing pressure than round rods. I can't say that this should be better, but I have achieved a better edge using my sharpmaker than I have with ceramic round rod sharpeners.

They are both good. If my knives were all reasonably short and I had only one sharpener I might find the AG Russell with its diamond rods a better deal. Since I own other diamond sharpeners I haven't bothered to get and AG Russell.

AG Russell is a knife sharpener. The Spyderco Sharpmaker will sharpen virtually everything such as scissors, nail clippers, wire cutters, chisels, etc. They are really not comparable.

In all honesty, I don't own the AGR Field Sharpener. But Ive had such good experience with the Sharpmaker[SM], its hard to imagine anything beating them out.

From what I know-

The Sharpmaker [SM]:
The Tri-angles of the SM allow sharpening of serrated edges.
The SM has a better reputation.
The SM has a simple system that makes sense to me.
The SM has MANY/multiple uses/configurations- will do anything.

The AGR:
Great brand name- no question of quality
Round cermic rods have often disappointed me.
Rods seem shorter than those on the SM so its harder to sharpen longer knives.
Only does knives.

Seriously, I love my SM!!!
