I have one that has Police model on the blade with no steel marking and one marked G2 with nothing on the blade.

Rycen, since you seemed kind of bummed out about no one replying, I'll make a horrendous guess although I'm bound to be wrong.

The G-2 is GIN-1. A steel that has similar composition to ATS-34. I'm going to guess that it is two generations back (early 90's?) since my brand new Police is VG-10, and the generation before that was ATS-55.

Of course. I'm probably wrong since Spyderco sometimes has more than one version of the same model (e.g. Native FRN in CPM 440V, and Native SS in GIN-1), and some of their knives are made in Colorado, while some are manufactured in Seki, Japan.

I don't know about the unmarked one. Possibly one of the first generation ones?

I'm sure someone else will come along and know with certainty.

I really like my new SS Police in VG-10 as you probably do your Police knives. But I'm too scared to use it or carry it since I don't wanna scuff up the bee-yoo-tee-ful brushed stainless steel handles. I just take it out of the box, open and close it, oil the blade, and put it back in the box. Sad isn't it? Can I get help for that? :(

Full Tang Clan,

I felt the same way when I first got mine...worried about scratching it up. I then heard about how the original finish can be easily restored using the right grit of emery paper, #150 to #300...if I recall correctly. So now I just use it and enjoy it, and I don't think much anymore about the scratches, comfortable that if I ever decide to I can sand them out.

Jeff/1911.

Jeff,

I'm thinking about getting a cordura sheath but I wonder if even that would be abrasive on the stainless steel. Maybe leather might be better? I also have to find one that will fit the big handle. I've already given up on finding a big sheath for a SIFU.

I also figure that if it gets scratched up enough, I'll take my Dremel and polish to it and give ia mirror finish (yeah, I know it will make it slippery)...but it will look goooood! ;)

Hi Rycen. I appreciate your persistance and patience. Sorry for delay. I guess I'm the only one that knows (that's scary).

G2 was an early name for "Gingami I" or GIN-I as we currently stamp on knives using that steel. It is a good all around steel with more carbon that AUS-8, but less than ATS-34. We used it in most of our knives from 1981 until about 1996.

The Police model with no steel marked is an older one. Made right after we stopped marking them "PIG" (about 1985). Then we made a batch or two with no "Police Model" marking due to dealer requests. Then the dealers said they wanted the marking back so we changed the marking to POLICE which was chemically etched, then later stamped, and at this time being lazer etched. Reminds me somethin' about "all of the people or all of the time?"

hope that helps.
