I am 16 living in suburban NJ. I own many knives, and have carried a small knife as part of my EDC for about a year now. I have used it before in public and in front of police, and have never had any trouble. I want to know, once and for all,is it illegal for me to carry a legally sized knife at my age?

It would be illegal to walk into a knife store and buy a knife at your age. But carrying one that's within the legal limits? Nope. I've never heard of that being a problem.

down here in Florida the way I understand it. your parents buy you the knife and you get to carry it but you can not buy it yourself.

Chicago, too. 2" or less blade under 17, (or maybe 18?) 2.5" or less blade over 17 (or 18.)

Indeed, age restriction on carry are very rare. Besides the ones mentioned above, Arizona has one of a sorts, in that if you are under 21 you can only carry a common pocket knife, though overall AZ's carry laws are some of the most relaxed in the entire US to the point a GUN can be carried without permit when over 21. It's a very carry-friendly state so even a minor with a bigger knife would have to be doing something far more dangerous than just carry alone for cops to give them a second look.

It should also be mentioned that actual laws on sale to minors are very rare too. Stores just refuse to sell to minors as a personal choice because if the minor cuts themselves, the parents will no doubt sue the store. Stores love to lie about this and say "sorry, state law" but that is just to keep customers from whining and arguing with them.

Google NJ State Statues to be sure, I grew up in NJ and carried a pocket knife to school but then that was a few eons ago.

If you get busted, tell the cops you found it.
If you get busted, tell the cops absolutely NOTHING! Shut up and lawyer up. That said, most of these age-restrictions are for purchase, not possession. Many stores will not sell to minors for good reason. Happened to me when I was 17 back in the summer of 1978. Just graduated high school, but was not 18 years of age and the local cutlery dealers would not sell to me. Gave the money to my friend's brother. He went to a local gun shop and purchased the Gerber FS II folder that I wanted. My first lock-blade knife. This was decades before Lawrence passed the 2 1/2 inch blade length limit as a local ordinance, so it was perfectly legal for me to carry that knife, concealed or openly, in public. I chose concealed carry and I still prefer that method. Never had a problem with LEOs.
