yup, you must be 18 or older. los angeles has a municipal code prohibiting minors from carrying any weapon, including knives.

direct from a legal resource guide.

SEC. 45.01. FIREARMS – KNIVES – SLINGSHOTS – SALE TO MINORS.

(a) slingshot,

(b) springback knife,

(c) fixed or locking blade knife having a blade over two inches in length,

(d) dirk or dagger having a blade over two inches in length,

(e) ice pick,

(f) tool or implement having a point similar to an ice pick, a shaft at least three inches in length and a handle,

(h) gun,

(i) revolver,

(k) spring or air gun or other device designed or intended to discharge any pellets, BB shot, shot or other deadly or dangerous missile, or

(l) ammunition, cartridge, shell or other device, whether containing any explosive substance or not, designed and intended for use in any weapons enumerated herein.

Work related uses of any of the above weapons are not prohibited under this section.

SEC. 45.02. FIREARMS – MINORS – POSSESSION OF.

(C) So Any blade over 2 inches. So if its under 2 inches its fine?

read the section highlighted in red.

yes, under two inches is legal.

Ok thank you. LA has some ridiculous laws. So here i come Benchmade Benchmite ll. Do you think i could get into any trouble if i have a knife with a blade 2.25". Like the CRKT K.I.S.S series. Also the gerber F.A.S.T draw. It has a blade of 2.1" Im guessing this is fine? Or Kershaw Onion Chive. It looks amazing and has a blade of 1.9875" blade. It is assisted opening. Are assisted opening knives fine? Sorry for so much questions but i dont want ny trouble if i fall into the law.

maybe, depends on how it is discovered and what you are doing. if it is illegal you run the risk of arrest.

in trying to skirt the law, you are always running a risk. it will depend on how the officer measures the blade, ie entire blade or cutting edge, that determines whether you are in compliance or not at any given time.

2.1 is more than 2.0. hard to argue that fact. 1.9875? i would not advise you to carry a knife that comes that close to the legal limit. ultimately you may be vindicated. but is it worth getting booked and having to appear in court several times for?

there is nothing that currently addresses assisted openers, though some may say they are switchblades, which if they have a blade over 2", are illegal as well per the ca penal code.

Ok well thanks. Well the only way they would discover it is if im cutting something, or if they see the clip shown from my pocket. If my dad doesnt care if i have a knife with me, ( one that totally fits in all the law catigories,) why should i have a problem?

if it is compliant with all laws you wont have a problem.

also consider, per 626.10 pc, no one may possess a knife on school grounds, colleges and universities included. this section is a felony. in general, slipjoints and sak's do not apply, but any locking blade or fixed blade will fall under this section. unless you are an employee and the knife is used for work purposes.

and if you are detained for any reason, and a search is conducted, the knife will likely be found. if it is not in compliance you may be cited or arrested.

Oh yes i know not to take a knife to school. Or any education areas.

I also found this about assisted opening knives.

For the purposes of this section, "switchblade knife" means a
knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a
spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife or any other
similar type knife, the blade or blades of which are two or more
inches in length and which can be released automatically by a flick
of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other
mechanical device, or is released by the weight of the blade or by
any type of mechanism whatsoever. "Switchblade knife" does not
include a knife that opens with one hand utilizing thumb pressure
applied solely to the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to
the blade, provided that the knife has a detent or other mechanism
that provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade,
or that biases the blade back toward its closed position.

actually, "assisted openers" are generally not considered switchblades by those that make them. the last descriptions, i believe, exempt assisted openers from being switchblades.

imo, they do not fit into the definition above.

however, my opinion may not be the same as someone else's, in particular a judge or another police officer.

although i am not aware of any decisions, were a judge to determine an assisted opener to be a switchblade, it would set a precedence for case law and possibly be referenced in other cases with similar knives.

Hmm ok so is there a place for me to call and see what the laws are specificlly for the stuff i asked? Like a PD, or should i just ask a police officer the next time i see one?

problem is, like many laws, they are not interpreted the same by everyone.

with few exceptions, a law is written purposefully open to interpretation.

the best advice i can give is this: know the laws, make sure your knife falls within the acceptable definitions, carry it in a manner that is legal.

Ok thanks Morimotom. You are the only one that helped me. Thanks
