So for the last three+ weeks I can't open attachments on Yahoo Mail.

Me: I can't open attachments. I get a message "The requested URL was not found on this server. AOLserver/3.4.2 on http://errors.aol.com." I an using Netscape browser, AOL ISP, and Windows XP.

Yahoo: Hello. We are sorry you are experiencing problems with your Yahoo Mail. We note that you are using Netscape browser, which is no longer suppoprted by AOL. We suggest that you change browser from Netscape to FF or IE

Me: [days later] I changed browser to FF and problem continues.

Yahoo: Netscape browser is no longer supported.

Me: I am not using Netscape browser. I did change browsers to FF as you suggested. Also tried IE. Problem continues.

Yahoo: We find that using a supported browser like FF or IE solves many such problems.

Me: Hello! I changed browser over a week ago and also tried a second supported browser, IE, with no change. This does not appear to be an unsupported browser problem.

Yahoo. Hello. We are sorry that you are experiencing problems with your Yahoo Mail. We suggest that you try a supported browser. Here are links to FF and IE.

Me: PLEASE read what I am telling you. I am not using Netscape browser.

Yahoo: We are sorry that you are experiencing problems with your Yahoo Mail. Please send us a screen shot of the error message.

Me: Here is a screen shot of the error message.

Yahoo: It appears that you are using an unsuported browser. We suggest that you switch to a supported browser like FF or IE.

Me: Please read this. Please! "Netscape Connect" is the name of my ISP. It is not, and has never been, the name of a browser. My browser is FF. I have also tried IE with no change.

Yahoo: Hello. We are sorry that you are experincing problems with your Yahoo Mail. We find that problems are often caused by using an unsupported browser. We suggest that you consider switching to a supported browser like FF or IE. Here are links to those browsers.

While I was typing the above, this message arrived:

Hello,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Priority Support.

I'm sorry you're having problems with your Yahoo! Mail account. Most
issues with Yahoo! Mail can be fixed by making sure you're using an
up-to-date Internet browser.

You indicate that you have the problem with attachments only when connecting through AOL. Are you suing the AOL browser? Please note that the AOL browser is not a supported browser.

Please try switching to another supported browser, such as the ones
listed at the Yahoo! Help web site below:

http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/errors/errors-19.html

Get the latest version of Internet Explorer at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

Get the latest version of Mozilla Firefox at:

http://www.mozilla.com/firefox

Did updating your browser or switching to another one fix the problem?
If not, please send me more details, and I'll be happy to help you.

Be sure to check the Official Yahoo! Mail Blog for more information
about our Yahoo! Mail product updates, new releases and bug fixes.

Yahoo! Customer Care

What I don't get is that a simple "Go away." or "Who cares." would take less time to generate.

My reply to yahoo's latest

As I have reported over a dozen times, I an NOT using the AOL browser.

Let me repeat that: I AM NOT USING THE AOL BROWSER.

I presently use AOL only as my ISP.

I AM using FireFox as my browser.

I have also tried IE browser with no change.

I have repeatedly told Yahoo that I changed my browser to FireFox and have also tried IE with no change.

Yahoo simply ignores my reports and advises me, over and over again, to change my browser.

This refusal to bother taking into account what the customer teels you is indicative of a level of indifference to the customer that is absolutely stunning.

I have retained copies of your emails over the last weeks that illustrate this travesty.

I am reporting this poor treatment on forums that are reached by any Google search on the topic so the world can see how little Yahoo cares about its customers.

If I can find a way, and I assure you that I will make an effort that may amaze you, I will report this treatment to Mr. Yang on the very, very small chance that HE cares a whit about customer service.

Would it not be faster to simply reply to customer problems with :
"Buzz off, chump. We really could not care less."

Now, how do I reach Mr. Yang?

See what I can learn from ePrey?
Yahoo mail service poor terrible indifferent attachments open opening customer complain complaints

I feel your pain TL.

A few weeks ago I could log into my Hotmail acct but it would not let me open the messages.

After a few frantic days I started looking on the web and found some sort of Hotmail interface site and turned out they had done some sort of "upgrade" and it was causing all sorts of problems.

They had a feedback form and I filled it out. About 2 days later my acct started working again.

Here's how it works at Yahoo "Customer Service" (see "honest politician"):

First you get this (received minutes ago):
Thanks for giving us another opportunity to answer your questions.

Your case has been re-opened and sent to a Yahoo! Priority Support Agent
who will get back to you as soon as possible (usually within 24 hours).

Sincerely,

The Yahoo! Customer Care Team

THIS IS AN AUTOMATED RESPONSE - PLEASE DO NOT REPLY.

My response above gets assigned to a new rep, who does not read anything I've ever sent. Then he/she/it will send a canned response: "Change your browser."

How dio I reach Yahoo Yang?

Reminds me of a problem we were having with our AT&T DSL. The wireless router included in the package had been working fine for several months. Suddenly, none of the three laptops in the household could connect to the Internet. They would detect the WiFi signal, and the router would detect the devices, but there was no connection. When we called for support in India, the representative walked me around in circles until it drove me batty.

That's a good point... Thomas, are you using a router?

Perhaps you should change to a supported browser. (Damn! No smileys when using the quick reply option.....)

Seriously, try Opera. I just switched over from FF to Opera and loads of problems have gone away, as if by magic.

Also, try dumping all of your cookies and history and everything, close your browser, reopen, see what happens.

Fitting use of quotation marks, HD. Funny the things some companies do ostensibly to "improve" the software.

Put on your tinfoil hats:

I think software makers are in cahoots with hardware manufacturers to create ever more bloated and horsepower-intensive programs to force consumers to upgrade their computer components as well... assuming, of course, they want what is being pitched to them. Hardcore gamers are the most obvious examples of those slavish to this form of planned obsolescence. Ironically, they're nothing to show for all their hours on the computer, other than the fleeting joys of the games.

No router.
AOL ISP
FireFox (but Netscape and IE get the same - bad - results)
Yahoo Mail
Windows XP Home with no upgrades since 2004 - 'cause every time I did upgrades, BIG problems appeared. Tech support said to run Restore and forget upgrades.

At home, I have:

Tried FireFox
Tried IE
Cleared cookies
Cleared cache
Disabled all security features
Rebooted and rerebooted
Opened and reopened software
Tried other email services. They work fine. All attchments accessable.

At the Library, where they say they do NOT use AOL as their ISP (use somethin' they call "Open Source Coop" ??), the problem does not exist. I had a choice of FireFox or IE as browsers, and there was no difference. Could open attachments fine.

Looks like AOL and Yahoo Mail are not playing well.

When I get to human beings on the telephone, AOL tech support blames Yahoo and -- wait for it! -- Yahoo tech support says it's AOL's fault.

Yahoo gets my vote due to the VERY irritiating "change your browser" gambit (and the repeated, automated "We are escalating your problem." emails).

Also, Yahoo has been having all sorts of problems lately. You are clicking along, and suddenly you get a Yahoo error message (Error 1 or Error 4 or Error 14), and have to reboot your computer to go on working in Yahoo Mail or any other application.

Questions about the same problem by others at the Yahoo company forums are unanswered or deleted by Yahoo (the clues remain in Google - can read the key words but post is deleted at yahoo).

How do I get to Yang?

Actually those same thoughts went thru my mind.

Well, AOL definitely sucks and I know they interefere with competitive software. I use Yahoo, but only out of habit, not because it provides great service.

I don't know how to get to (or "at") Yang, but why not change email services, since you know others work well?

I'm pretty sure somebody has an unused gmail account they can give you.....

Why?

1. Have to change my email address at taksan sites.

2. 847 emails carefully organized in 27 files. Sign up for AOL's fee email and they automatically transfer all your stored emails - whether you like it or not. Transfer - not copy. And if there is a "problem"? "So sorry; we regret"

Funny, ain't it, that AOL comes out with free email and thereafter there are problems using Yahoo's free email for AOL ISP customers.

Oh, I forgot one great suggestion from Yahoo "Customer Service." After being told all the above (like works fine with competing email products): "Maybe there is something wrong with your computer." Nothing like useful advice. Missing the Yahoo Chip Set?

Have you tried using a different browser?

:D

Sorry, I was reading the Short Sword thread over in the Sword forum again.

Ludicrous.

You get to do nothing about it then huh?

Tom are you using the 'new & improved' Yahoo email format or the old 'classic' format? You might try changing one for the other and see what happens if anything. I prefer the 'new & improved' format but had to change to the classic a few days ago for a short time in order to do something although I don't recall what it was now. Damned short term memory loss. :( :o

Yvsa, I am using the "Classic" version, but people with both versions are having the problem - that does not exist -- unless it's AOL's problem -- in which case it does exist.

Damn Tom, that truly sux big time and I'm sorry you're having the problems with whichever one it is! :(
I don't know the whys and wherefores you got involved with AO-Hell although I do know that many thousands, if not millions, of folks chose to use their services. I'm just really glad our adopted kids had been involved with computers way back, maybe even some of them before Al Gore invented the Internet,;) and warned me away from AO-Hell.
I've heard countless horror stories about folks having to reinstall their OS because no matter what they did they couldn't get rid of the AOL Browser or some other part of AOL.:(
Oh well, at least changing formats was an idea even if it wouldn't help.:)
