Man, I am having a terrible time picking my new boots. I wanted to stay with Merrell, but they have so many designs from which to choose! I also went a half size larger than my last pair. I ended up ordering Phaser Peaks, Refuge Cores, and the Col Mids, all waterproof. I've tried them all on, and now I have to decide. I can say that the Refuge Cores feel the most like my old Moabs, Light and flexible. The others have more leather and might need some break in. I hate decisions like this. :o

After a lot of online research I recently got a pair of LL Bean Cresta hiking boots. The reviews on these boots were almost universally good, then I noticed a friend of mine wearing a pair he'd had for ten years and he gave them a very favorable rating. I walk a lot, so we'll see.

I just recently bought a pair of hitech v lites, there a nice simple water proof leather boot and there very light. maybe worth a look? I had my last pair for 6 years and would of had them longer but we just got a bloody puppy who ate them yes not just chewed them but actually ate the lining and parts of the sole

Brother, I hear ya loud and clear. Foot wear is something I've been complaining about for a while now. I don't even know where to begin, so you are far better off than I am. I can't make up my mind on high ankle support or low. I love support, but I love the workout on my calves from a low profile boot/shoe. I like a good stiff toe as well.

I feel like you can't go wrong with high support. The terrain around here is so unpredictable. Lots of water crossings as well.

I live in the high country of the appalachian mountains. In between the Cumberland and Clinch ranges. It's steep out here. I agree about the support, but still really like getting the workout and added strength in my entire lege, from balls of my feet to the tips of my glutes, with the low profile shoes. It is really amazing how much different your calves feel when doing steep hiking compaired to flat or low grade when wearing low ankle support shoes.

I love my Ariat cowboy/ work boots. Good looking, comfortable, waterproof, tough, and light weight. No laces to get hung up, and they have a composite toe that is similar to having a steel toe, but is light and doesn't get cold. They did take a couple of weeks to break in, but they're as comfortable as slippers now.

Sorry about the huge image. It took me a long time to find the "perfect" boot, but that's what these are for me.
