Things are a little slow today so I'm at the coat & tie forge again. I'm feeling a little artsy today and that's always dangerous.

I decided to make a Wrought iron/Damascus, bearded hawk..(Whew)

Here's the problem....I welded the Damascus to the Wrought iron body and eye and that went fine. I have to grind the Damascus some to get the pattern and that means I'll have to carry the bevel into the iron.

After I do that, how do I blend those areas together and make the ground WI, look like wrought iron again?

If that makes any sense!

How about a nice baked oil finish? wipe the wrought down with some cooking oil and bake it. Repeat a few times and It will make it look slicker that a well used skillet.

I usually etch the wrought iron fittings sometimes for hours. I normally will pull the wi out every hour or so and rub it with still wool. You'll just have to put some sort of stop on the damascus untill your ready to do that. What did the wrought iron come from?

Thanks everyone.
Ray, they came from those giant Amish Barn Hinges I got. They are 4 feet + long and 3/8" thick. They forge beautifully.

I expect that the Damascus blade is a little much but to be honest, I've been thinking about selling something once in a while. If I do, it has to e special.

I'll try to take a picture in the morning Ray. Just imagine a regular strap hinge (with a decorative finial on the tip) 4 feet long.
