My daughter's middle name honors Hypatia of Alexandria, an ancient philosopher and mathematician. Her works did not survive but accounts of them did. She is said to have done important work on conic sections.
Agora is a fictionalized account of the life of Hypatia. She is little known of these days so it is good to see this most interesting historical figure brought back into the limelight. Agora is the greek word for the public meeting place, similar to the Roman forum. This movie illustrates some of the turmoil going on in the mediterranian world in the 4th century.
My Hypatia is now in college studying ancient languages. Among them ancient greek, latin, proto indo-european, and sanskrit. She tells me she enjoyed this recent movie about her namesake, and she just may do a project on the ancient philosopher whose name she shares.
