So I recently got my hands on the BK4. I love the look of this blade and have wanted one for a while. Long story short I got one off the forums here at a good price and it showed up yesterday. Not sure what I was expecting but when I opened the box I was left with the feeling of " you have got to be sh**ing me!" and to be honest I was completely underwhelmed by the size and the feel. It was fast in the hand but I was expecting something more substantial...something more along the lines of my BK9 which when in the hand let's you know it is there. Anyways I left it until this afternoon and decided to take a little trek to the woods with my BK4 to give it a shot. I wasn't expecting much but I must say this blade impressed the crap out of me. I chops very well...not as good as the BK9 but some of that could be user error too :D but it cleared brush like a champ and split wood like a big blade should...now I understand I need more time in the saddle with it to get a better grasp of how to improve my chopping with it but I am left with the dilemma...when I go in the woods which big blade do I take  I can't leave my bk9 at home as that is just plain silly and as a wise man once said "You can't not have a 9" but I like the feel of the 4 as well and feel it would be a great bush blade as well.

Anyone out there have the same issue and what did you finally decide on carrying?

I like to keep the BK-4 sheath (which holds either 9 or 4 just fine) mounted to my pack, and my Skystorm sheath (which holds either 9 or 4 equally well) in my belt, and then swap between my 4 and 9 as the mood strikes. I've noticed that the 9 seems to chop dead wood better than the 4, but the 4 does a great job on greenwoods and heavy brush. Basically, anything I'd normally use a machete for, I grab my 4. If I need to baton or take out dead stuff, the 9 is mobilized. Even though it tends to go against the Beckerhead grain, my 4 has been used a lot more than my 9, since I use my 4 for much of my yard work. It gets worked out a lot, especially now in the summertime.

Mastering the snap cut with the four changes the level of performance you will see out of it.

^This. The BK-4 is definitely a knife with a learning curve. Performs great out of the box, but once mastered, it's a rabid beaver. I have dropped multiple trees in a sitting with a BK-4. But, as for me, I switch between the 4 and 9 based on my mood.

I had almost exactly the same experience. The 4 is noticeably smaller than the 9, but once you grok the technique (snap cut etc) it can hang with the 9.

Snap cut improving.... Edge convexed and still have all 10 fingers so far so good.... Gotta say this little big blade can do a lot of damage..... Still not sure what to carry , probably make one into a neck knife for my malamute lol. In all honesty this is a great design.... It chops very well, splits great whittles great for a big blade and is very fast in the hand so a job wel done Mr Becker
