Just had to vent with some folk that would understand. My son lost his favorite knife ( an Emerson CQC-7 which was engraved with his name and USMC Eagle,Globe and Anchor), while training at 29 palms, so we replaced it with a Spyderco Green Military D2, which he really liked. He was just deployed to Iraq, and during the travel through Kuwait and Iraq, his Spydie disappeared. He had it clipped in his pocket, and 2 days ago noticed it missing! He is really frustrated at losing two nice knives. I am going to replace it, but am not sure with what. Perhaps a Cara Cara, because it seems as though these knives may not have a particularly long lifespan in that environment. Well, thanks for listening to the wimpering of a dad.

Sorry to hear of your son's two losses. I would think something in the lower price range might not be a bad idea. Can't speak of the knife you mentioned, but wanted to wish your son a safe tour.

Thanks for the replies. He is a very responsible young man, not at all careless with his things, but I guess the nature of their activities, predisposes them to losing things from their pockets. I suspect that the last knife was dislodged by hiking up his sea bags to his shoulder.
Thanks for the well wishes. We are trusting in the Lord, his training, and his personal skills. We are proud of him and support him and the other troops, in their valiant tasks.

Whatever you buy him, get him a lanyard that will clip to his belt loop. Something that will hold the knife if it slips out of his pocket, but snap easily if enough pressure is put on it. Or a belt sheath.

sorry to hear about the lost knives and I hope that your son stays safe in his travels and tour.

Great Idea. Any links to particularly well designed ones?
Thanks.

Send him two or three. One for his belt, one for his pocket, and one to through in his pack. This way he has a backup. You could also get him a On Scene Tactical Neck Sheath, maybe for a waved model Spydie. As a note, I went the multiple knife route with my brother who is a corpsman.

I think Kiahs is on the track. Get a lanyard for his knife. McMasterCarr has a really nice SS clip (part no. 8907T61). Not cheap, but I've had one for 20 years and then some with out it breaking or the latch wearing out. TAD Gear has some smaller ones, but I haven't tested them as long as the McMaster ones. They do seem very nice and I have several of them and they are holding up just fine for the last two years (http://www.tadgear.com/x-treme%20gear/accessories%20main/ss_spring_clips.htm).

Often times I will make a lanyard long enough so that it suspends my knife in my pocket, that way it doesn't sink to the bottom.

Thanks, guys. Those are great suggestions. Any personal preferences with the configuration of lanyard, clip, etc.?
Thanks for the links.

It really is a good choice to go cheap while deployed. When I was deployed we would even find other peoples knives. One of my buddys even found a Swiss Army Champ. There is a gold mine of lost knives out there in the world.:) The best bet is a folder that's a lightweight model kept in the top BDU pocket or one that is kept in the pocket and lanyard to the belt. I used a "Knute Hitch" to secure mine.
