Just got a new Ahti Varra Puukko in today. Looks like it will be a pretty nice knife. The handle is of course stained curly birch but it seems a bit dry to the touch. Obviously not an expensive knife per se, so resale value means little to me. With that said I am thinking of treating the handle with a coat or 2 of BLO. Any downside to that? I put it on all my axes and hatchets with wooden handles. Hasn't made them slick to me at all.

Thanks Rich S for the link to a pic. BLO boiled linseed oil. It's a pretty common acronym. I just figured anyone who didn't know what BLO was couldn't help me anyway, :D. I'm just messing with you.

In the past many traditional puukkot had birch handles that were treated with some sort of varnish. So no, it wouldn't be an issue.....

I use tung oil on my wooden knife handles (Roselli curly birch) and ax hafts. Lasts longer under wet conditions than boiled linseed oil.

If you already have & use BLO, nothing wrong with putting it on your new knife. If you want to try something else, walnut oil was also used by the Scandinavians to seal the wood on their tools.

They are great knives, the 80crv2 steel is very well treated.
