I am set to get myself a pellet gun. My backyard is overrun with Squirrels. I plan to spend about $200. Am I better off with a .22 power gun which is slower (~ 800fps) or the .177 which might be over 1000fps. I am looking for knockout power with little noise. Thanks

i bought a sheridan 5mm pellet gun that would kill squirrels with ease. its even dropped a few raccoons in its time. i bought it brand new back in 1979 for just over $100. and shot it so much i had to completely rebuild the insides. its probably had over 10.000 pellets shot through it or darn close to it when i had it. a friend has it now and i dont know how many 500 round packs he has gone through. they are around $125. or so and well worth the price. there was another thread about pellet guns a few months ago, do a search and you can read more about other pellet guns.

if your budget is $200 go wth the Sheridan in .20, and remember shot placement is the key rule, one shot one kill applies here as well. If you want to upgrade that Sheridan contact these guys for a steroid conversion.

the spring type .177 are the way to go imho, though they are a little noisier than pump ups ya have just as much or more power and no more damn pumping the thing, IIRC .177 is supposedly the best way to go because accuracy is better, i dont know for sure though all my stuff has always been .177.

IIRC i have seen chinese rifles like this for sale for ~$50 or so (my bud has one, w/a cheap 3X9 scope) and its plenty powerfull and really accurate, especially for the $$ involved.

& of course there are more expensive ones too.

I'd get a .22 air rifle. As with firearms, bullet weight and diameter are what kills best. Certainly you can kill limb rats with a .177, but they have tough hides and I believe a .22 will penetrate better than a .177, even though the .177 may be faster.

I've heard .22 for fur, .177 for feathers.

I'd agree that a multi stroke pneumatic would be a good choice. Buy whatever you think you can shoot best. And please do some target practice before trying any deanimation.

I just bought a .177 Gamo Big Cat 1200 (since my Benjamin 5mm Blue Streak recently died on me). It's relativaly accurate and kills squirrels and other smaller type game with no problem. I got it on sale at Cabela's for $99.95 incl. 4X32 scope and rings. If you wanna go big, check out my Beaman Crow Magnum

A decent full power .22 PCP gun will do. Deadly accurate - almost no recoil. Air Arms/Logun/Fx/BSA or Gunpower make nice ones.

Or - if you're not going with PCP - Check the Weihrauch HW-90 with the Gas Ram as apposed to a spring. The advantage is that the gas ram is basically adjustable in power, so it lets you choose a decent mix between accuracy and power. Available in .177, .22 and .25.
