My father-in-law has a small kiln that would work for heat treating . How or where would i find info on the air quench methods for different steels

There's not much to know when it comes to air quenching. Basically you either cool in still air, or rapidly with moving air such as with a fan. What will really be important to you is things like preheat/stress relieving heats, soak times (if applicable), and tempering phase temperatures. If you already know what steel you plan to use, there are several people who visit this site that can help you. I've done all my heat treating since 1993, and primarily do carbon steels because I forge most of my blades. But I've done my share of stainless air-hardening steels such as A2, D2, 440C, ATS34, etc. I'd be glad to help.
