Team BF - Help me old & young wise ones. I live in the city limits with some woods out back. I saw my first coyote out back this morning. Here's where the plot thickens, we have some very special to us, cats. We love them. We do not want to see them get eaten. I'd like to get a very accurate and powerful air rifle but not break the bank. I do not need a pretty wood stock. I like flat black synthetic better anyway. What are my options from low to high? I bow to your knowledge. Please...enlighten me.

Sounds like you need this one. http://www.gamousa.com/product.aspx?product=Whisper&productID=234

I also saw a Ruger Air Hawk at a Walmart today. I think it was around $109. I bet it would do very well too. I think it had wood stocks though. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Also might look at a couple that are on the Dicks Sporting Goods website. It looks like there is a Crosman G1 Extreme that might be what you are looking for.

Coyotes are pretty sturdy. Unless you just want to injure them, I wouldn't recommend even a high powered .22 cal air rifle. There are models that will drop a deer, but they employ larger calibre projectiles, high pressure gas reservoirs, and a serious hunk of change.

I'd say dont get an air rifle to hunt them unless you get one of those monster .50 cal air rifles designed to take down bigger game. get a .22 real rifle at least. they are cheap and a nice 10/22 will be fairly dead on. since your in city limits, your gonna probally need to spend quite a bit of money on an air rifle to take down an animal and not just injure it.

I would highly suggest keeping your cats indoor. coyotes are not the only things out there and getting hit by a car aint the worst thing which can happen, they could get a bite from a rabid animal and then bite one of your children...

Ya
Id be scared to just come up with an injured coyote.
Either kill him with a powerful enough gun,
or get a cheap bb gun, maybe even a Red Ryder spring loaded
bb gun and scare him away.

Even though the coyotes seem to be problematic in many areas,
there is no reason to just injure an animal and let it suffer.

(Just my city boy thoughts,
all comments and replies are not welcome ;) )

You know gentlemen, I think I'll just call the ODNR on Monday morning.
Thanks guys, talking things over here are like talking to my Dad who's no longer with us.

A powerful 22 cal air rifle with proper shot placement can do a coyote no 2 ways about it. Or you now have the option of getting a 25 cal also.
Check out an Airforce Condor, though it is way loud, its powerful and accurate and can be had in 22 or 25 cal.
Also, a Sumatra or Evanix AR6 is a good option. The AR6 is the most quiet of the lot. Any of these would set you back by USD800 or so minimum.

Are you trying to kill the coyotes or just scare them away?

A good crossbow might work will if your trying to kill them.

i have a pellet rifle that i'll loan you so you can see if you need something bigger. i did have a 20 cal sheridan that would work perfectly for your needs but i traded it for the gun i have now. you might look into a good slingshot too. there are some that are pretty powerful.

Thank you all. I guess "putting it" out here opened up my mind. I think a call to the Ohio DNR will be best. (and the cheapest)

First of all, don't shoot a firearm (even 22lr) in the city limits. You are asking for lots of trouble if law enforcement or a nosey neighbor shows up.

A larger caliber air rifle from a reputable brand will work well if you place your shots well. You definitely want to step up to a .22 pellet.

With air rifles, you get what you pay for. There is a world of difference in a Wal-Mart cheap Chinese import and ~$500 Beeman for example.

Trapping is tough and poisoning, well ...... I'll let you decide.

Watch out for The Roadrunner syndrome on modifying coyote behaviors..things that sound like they should work could get you a breakfast or two at the Columbus Gray Bar Hotel.

ODNR your best bet if a 'yote eats Sugar and Spice or whatever your kitties are named.

Then there is always the .300 Whisper sub-sonic, suppressed but since they closed the old State prison in Columbus as I recall I don't know about the long-term State bed and breakfasts currently available...won't be blueberry waffles, for sure.

I have a pretty high muzzle velocity .177 and I wouldn't even think about using it on a coyote. A friend of mine got a .25 gas (nitrogen?) powered air rifle for @ $300 that he says will do the job. Says it's quieter than a spring gun too. Any decent crossbow would definitely do the job. This is all assuming you have a clear field of fire.

That said, I think your idea about calling on your local animal control is the best idea.
