Just a little rant here.... Mods feel free to move it if there's a better place.

I was just surfing eBay and came across this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=42577&item=7103808921&rd=1

That these were confiscated and are now being sold for profit by someone else kind of got me a little riled up. I realize that everyone should be aware of the rules of flying by now, but still this is rediculous. I guess we're all safer now that these evil sharp pointy things are being stopped by the System before they can cause real harm.... :rolleyes: I'm sure keeping 1" blades, toothpicks, and nail files off of planes is lot more productive than say, um, inspecting shipping containers and putting more focus on our north/south borders. Look at the person's other auctions and sleep sounder tonight knowing all those deadly weapons have been seized society won't collapse at least for a few more days. :barf:

<rant mode off>

By the way, I am not the seller or connected to them in any way.

I am willing to bet they were NOT confiscated. From what I have read everthign that is confiscated is destroyed.

From what I've read, in a previous thread here, confiscated items are being resold to help pay for the cost of keeping us all safe in the friendly skies ... :rolleyes:

I really have no objection to a government picking up a few bucks instead of relying wholly on tax money. But the idea of taking items like this from ordinary everyday citizens is ignorant.

We are less safe for having been turned into dehorned cattle.

I know of a few people that are buying these confiscated items in bulk and selling them at shows. If they are confiscated, I guess it is better to get them back into the hands of the public rather than destroying them.

It seems rather interesting to me that while you see many items such as SAKs or Leathermans being sold, there's rarely if any high end folders in those auctions. One should think that at some point someone would also forget about lets say a BM710, or a higher end spyderco. I mean, the price difference to a good leatherman tool isn't that big.
So it should be very likely that some of those also are forgotten and confiscated at some point. how come they never show up ?

its no different to confiscated firearms, I've seen them sold off in mass to gun shops at rediculously low prices then he sells em for retail second hand prices. I remember a thread not long back with pictures of an auction type thing in some city or county, anyhoo the picture had thousands of confiscated knives that were being sold back to the public. IMO I have no problem with it, if you take it on a plane expect it to be taken off you. At least they can be sold back to people instead of ending up in the mulcher, to be selfish it gives us not so financial collectors good deals on quality little blades.

The customs officer that took them, kept them ;)...I have a friend in customs, his admited to me that not everything confiscated is logged and stored (but his not at an airport, he works a import dock which checks smaller packages, principal is there).

Just a note. I went to D.C. two weeks ago and was surprised to get a plastic serrated knife on my lunch tray. I asked the Stew and she said they relaxed the rules. Kneejerk reactions sometimes fade.
