So I realized I have been flying a whole lot in the last couple of years. In the next month alone I will be going through the airport about 8 more times. It's good to have a system that works in the outdoors and on an airplane for keeping the must have gear at your fingertips.

Writer, photorapher, outdoorsman Terrill Hoffman has helped TOPS Knives design a Neck Survival Kit that can easily be used as a cool Travel Kit. It comes with all kinds of survival implements that won't be allowed on the plane but can be put in your check-in luggage until you reach your destination. In civilian mode it will hold all the boarding passes, receipts, money, luggage tags, and passport needed to get from one place to another. I am about as organized as a monkey so this helps me out big time.

My carry on bag kit has all the crap that I usually am annoyingly scrounging around for once we take off.

Just the essentials for those long 18 hour flights:grumpy:.
MP3 player/Music passes the time but more importantly drowns out little old ladies that are going to visit little Billy and wards off crying babies (like the ones from LA to Melbourne last year). Gum stops my ears from hurting and ultimately my head from blowing up once we land. I hate plane food so a good trail bar usually comes in handy after a few hours. I don't eat much! The whistle, mirror, and light (from TOPS) are for plane crashes as well as the life saver and sour candy, call it survival food. In all seriousness I feel better knowing I have signaling items while on a plane. The mirror is so I can fix my lipstick once we land. A write in the rain pen and some tape round out the kit.

Given the travel restrictions today, I have completely separate bags I use when flying., one is a carry-on and the other is for checked baggage. I don't ever use them for outdoors gear. Before I adapted this system, I was constantaly in fear of forgetting to remove some hidden piece of gear, like a gun or a knife. I don't think the Feds would be too understanding in today's enviornment.

I once forgot my Wenger Traveler in my pocket but was able to put it in my carry on and check it. I would have hated to loose that little knife.

All the cool outdoors gear goes in the check in. That worried me at first, I could always imagine me in some foreign place with no gear and having to find gear when I arrived. Especially if I had to buy real heavy stuff or couldn't find a Swiss Army Knife locally!

That seems like a handy little kit. Coincidentally I have spent the last couple of days prepping my own Airline friendly Kit I am flying to Vancouver saturday on my way to AK. I carry My kit in a maxpedition jumbo Versapack with Camera Ipod, Book, magazine etc. the back "CCW" pouch is great for Documents, and I always buy a large bottle of water after I get through security just to have hydration with me.

My standard Kit

In bag:
2 granola bars
Gum/candy
Zip pull compass
2 AA Led Minimag
Disposable poncho
6 AA batteries
bandana
First aid kit

In Pockets:
Swisstool Multitool
Streamlight Keymate
Whistle
bandana

I am thinking about adding a boyscout hotspark as It probably would pass without too much notice and give me a source of fire. Plus it would be no great loss if confiscated.

Swiss Champ is always in my check in, has been for 10 years.
For hotels, boats, and hikes it has all I need for travel. Thinking of replacing it with a Fieldmaster but don't want to loose the pliers and screwdrivers!

You actually take that on board a fight in your pocket?

Yes multitools without knives are okay in fact SAK makes an airline friendly model. I usually bring a small pair of Trauma shears in my firsta aid kit as well. Every once in a while you will get some overzelaous newbie with a hardon who wants to take it, but I have had no real trouble thus far.

I would prefer my Leatherman Squirt or the Sak adventurer that was in my pre 2001 carry on gear. but at least this way I have a couple basic tools to get me through until I can get to my luggage or pick up a lnife on the far end.

I think We forumites shoulde get together and set up some kind of exchange program with lock boxes in airport lobbies where we can pick up a loaner knife and drop it off before you get on the next plane. I will donate a knife to Newark international. so none of you have to enter that city unheeled.:D:thumbup:

This was my carry on when I used to travel back and forth to China.

2 bandanas
heavy work gloves
duct tape
zip ties
notebook
pen
sharpie
extra pair of glasses
first aid book
first aid kit
aspirin
advil
pepto bismal tablets
shoelaces
whistle
Victorinox Swisscard
Victorinox Sportsman 2
Leatherman tool
mini prybar
Minimag flashlight
extra batteries and bulbs
sewing kit
safety pins
eyeglass repair kit
smokes
matches
bag of Jolly Rancher candy (for the flight,no smoking for over 16 hours)

I took the bag as carry on with everything in it except the cutting tools, I kept it by my feet for the entire flight. At night in the hotel, I put my passport and wallet in the bag in case I had to leave the hotel for a fire or something.
As you can see, I "survived" my journey. Here is a pic of it all except for my Jolly Ranchers.

Twice now I have jumped on a plane for a short flight with a Vic on me, twice now I have gone right thru security and wasn't stopped. I set off the metal detector both times, both times they checked my boots, that was it. Both times I had completely forgotten I had the 84mm SAK on me, in my cargo pocket (where it always is).

For those times when I am not being stupid, I have a small case I drop all my non TSA approved items into and bury it within my check on, my carry on has a number useful items, but no sharps. (sadly). Since 99% of the time my carry on is my notebook bag, it has my iPod, PDA, Notebook, etc in it that I use daily, all the important stuff for a flight. Gum, lifesavers, etc. One pocket has a mirror, compass, Gerber Infinity-Ultra, banada, some 330lb climbing cored (much thinner then paracord) and thing like that. But those items are always there anyway, I do not pack it different for flying.

I usually check a Wenger SI but my carry on stuff is what you see here:

The MiniMag has a Niteize LED upgrade and the plastic keychain holder for the SwissTech tool has an LED on it as well.

 on all three.

I'm only 20 minutes from DTW (Detroit Metro) I could probably come up with a loaner if need be :D.
