Peter LaGana often included live subjects in his throwing demonstrations around the world....normally, he would choose a fearless volunteer from the audience rather than a trained assistant!

In his demonstration to the Dept. of the Army however, Peter used a trained assistant who wore a pine board underneath their coat.

After using a series of unrehearsed parries and blocking techniques against a fixed bayonet rifle, Peter finished his demonstration by delivering the Hawk in flight into the board....which penetrated the leather coat and nearly knocked the man over! Now, obviously, this is not an endorsed approach to backyard fun by the American Tomahawk Company, but it reveals a part of the Hawks's combative functionality.

In throwing, believe it or not, a Hawk can be thrown for a half spin at 6' as opposed to a complete rotation at 12'. By simply throwing the Hawk with the edge back, toward the thrower rather than the target, the distance is shortened to almost half and the Hawk lands in the target with the handle pointing UP rather than down.

By practicing both throws, one can become quite accurate in a short period of time using the half spin...

Underhand flips are fun too......both edge forward and edge back scenarios apply the same way, though the overhand generates the most speed and power.

Sidearm Throws have been quite popular among those who hunt small game...the Hawk "skims" the ground and can be effective for targets low in height.

I have found Hawk Throwing to be one of most fun things to do!!! If you have some experience tossing the big steel, share your thoughts!
