I need some thoughts on USAF jobs. My recruiter says I have color and good depth and my asvab score was good so I qualify for pretty much everything he could think of.

Any ideas on jobs? I'm looking at emergency management right now and wonders if anyone was in it and could give me an inside view and opinion. Thanks bush crafters!

Something that's going to prepare you for when you get out - unless you plan on making a career out of it - but then you still get out after 20 and have to do something. If you are at all into electronics I would say get into some kind of electronics gear repair/support/maintenance. Or IT.

But I am biased.

I need some thoughts on USAF jobs....I qualify for pretty much everything he could think of...

First thing off the top of my head...YOU choose...do NOT let him shuffle you into something "because it's available".

Second thing...you're about to hear the most amazing assortment of lies and mistruths you will EVER be exposed to. Keep this in mind when the excuses start from your recruiter about which jobs you are looking at.

Third...you can be on Active Duty for up to a year before Tech School. Which means a LOT of dumb stuff at your squadron while you are waiting. Don't get frustrated.

Now, I'm Retired from Bragg, right next to door to what used to be Pope AFB (now AAF), so my suggestions might freak you out...

CCT, JTAC, PJ/Para.

You're young, you're smart...the more 'specialized" you go, the more amazing your time in uniform will be.

Anyone can put on the uniform and drive a desk for 20 years...and die of absolute boredom.

Remember Shane Falco's "speech" from "The Replacements"- Pain heals, chicks dig scars....glory lasts forever.

The reason for my suggestions? You'll go through some of the most difficult schools you can possibly imagine, finishing bloodied, beaten and bruised...and becoming a member of a very elite group known as AFSOC with stories you can tell your grandchildren.

Or you can be part of the regular Air Force, watching planes take off and land all day...or be stuck in that plane as the bus driver or flight attendant.

Aim High Brother!

(Be careful with that Recruiter....you tell him Emergency Management and they'll put you in Hospitality Management....)

Whatever you choose (providing you like the field), make sure there is a civilian counterpart job on the outside. Otherwise, the training in your particular field may be very specific, and not translatable to a job once you get out. High tech is always good, and for your commitment to the USAF, they are providing you "free training" which you can take with you when you leave.

I went in as a crypto tech, but was lucky enough to get assigned to an EIG unit, so I ended up doing installations instead. That work experience helped me to get into the IT field. Years later, I now manage the communications division for a large electrical contractor.

All because of the USAF...

they can put you into any job they want to. they only promise what field you get to go into. the army you get the job you want or you can decide to get out. be careful. unless it has changed since I got out.
