Airport knives

I've noticed a lot of posts where people seem concerned about getting through airport security with their knives. Perhaps I'm just lucky, but I've been through countless airports and security checks with my Spyderco Delica in my pocket and have only once had airport security do anything other than ignore it (I always take it out and drop it in the dish with my keys, change, money clip, etc.). Even when a security officer did take a closer look at the knife, he measured it, nodded and gave it back to me. Now I haven't traveled out of the country, so maybe the rules are different for international flights, but I've experienced no problems since I got the knife and started carrying it religiously 5 years ago.

How come so many seemed concerned about taking a pocket knife on an airplane? Are they thinking they should be able to walk onto a plane with 13" pig-sticker strapped to their side?

The only time I got a second look was when I dropped 3 knives in the dish. All were small. I just got a curious look and got them back.

Anyone carried a black coated blade inside? Do they react funny to them? I want to carry my new 940BT Osborne (thanks for the knife, Art) next time I travels!

I can pass through easily internationally with normal size SAK. . .from Bangkok to S'pore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, USA., UK., Aus. . .etc.

I can pass through domestically with SAK + Spydies Cricket. . .since I own this little Cricket, I haven't got any chance to travel abroad.

I traveled from minneapolis to detroit last weekend for the vikings lions game, and on the way home I forgot to take my spyderco calypso out of my pocket, I was so paranoid about getting it taken away, but I walked through the metal detector, with the calypso, a cf ladybug, crkt peck, about ten keys, 7 dollars worth of change, and one of those victorinox credit card tool thingys in my wallet. I didn't even set the metal detector off. Is that normal?

kile...

Yes, I would say there's something wrong with tha metal detector.

I said "I can pass through easily". . .but the detector was always beep!
I got checked, then passed through.

Or, may be they set the sensitivity of the your detector ??

I'm leaving for Thailand on this friday for 3 weeks.I've visited your country 3 times and really like it.However am not up your knife laws in Thailand.I've not seen very many knives for sale there when I visited.
Have seen some big bowie/survival knives for sale from anywhere from Bangkok to Chiang Rai.Do you have many knife shops there to shop for knives?

Chang,
I've only tried to bring a black coated blade through aiport security once. It was at Oakland International Airport, and the knife in question was a Benchmade model 875sbt.

I put the knife in the change bucket as I went through the detector, and then the security officer asked me to open it. I opened it partially with both hands and handed it to her at her request. The security officer then walked away with my knife while saying something in Chinese (I think). At this point I thought I was going to lose the knife. Fortunately, after walking over to another security officer, who measured the knife, the female security officer came back and returned my knife without comment.

Since that incident, I always leave my knives in the car when going to the airport. Although I am curious to know if I could pass security with my Titanium La Griffe

Is there anyone out there who knows what the exact laws are regarding knives on airplanes? Are these dictated by some federal statutes, does the airport decide what to allow, or the airlines. What about folders vs. fixed blades. And what about packing knives in luggage -- are there any regulations (airline or otherwise) regarding that?

kirch,
A search of this forum and its archives will offer a wealth of discussion on this topic. To summarize briefly, the FAA guidelines are no folders over 4". Switchblades are strictly illegal, forget about fixed blades, and serrations are extremely unpopular. Bottom line is that the airlines/airports can set the rules as tight as they want, but generally (noting that YMMV) a 3" folder will pass through security without problems.

Kirch,

I second Dsvirsky. I've taken 3" plain blades through airport security in several US airports and also Frankfurt Germany. That includes in carry-ons and on my person. But again, YMMV.
