I lost my leatherman micra recently. forgot it was on my keyring. detected it in my carryon bag...i was like WTF do i have that they need to search my bag for??? then they find the micra...DOH! Needless to say i need a new one :(

Well, you can, but you have to check them. And then you open yourself up to theft or loss. I have flown quite a bit over the last six years, and I frequently check a knife or knives in my luggage. Haven't had a problem yet.

All the best,

- Mike

If you are going somewhere where you might need a knife (or ten) and are worried about baggage handlers stealing stuff out of your bags, just mail them to yourself at your hotel or wherever you are going. You can mail things to a post office as well, and have them hold the items for you. You can do the same things with expensive gear or gifts. I have even mailed stuff to myself on international trips in countries where I have been warned about baggage valuables theft.

As said:

Can't carry, can check.

When checking, obviously lock them in luggage but also wrap them in socks or underwear and put them in shoes or other container.

I've flown lots of things - knives, magazines, gear. Quality, locked luggage and clever stashing.

Good luck.

Metal scissors with pointed tips and blades shorter than four inches are OK for carry on and not a 3" folder?

And Spear guns? You can't carry on a Spear gun?

What's up with that?

I use a zip tie to secure the knife to the inside of the suitcase. I figure at least it will make it a little difficult for them and has worked so far. But if anyone thinks those folks won't flat out steal from you, you are mistaken. Also, I take a Delica or such, a good knife but won't break the bank if lost. It also has that hole to run the zip tie through. I usually check a Vic Camper too, it has been all over this side of the Earth, it's so beat up I doubt anyone would bother snatching it.

All my knives go into checked baggage. But before I put them into the suitcase, I put them (and all other valuables) into a "PacSafe" travel safe, (lockable pouch made with wire mesh between two layers of cordura,) and its cable gets secured to the inside of my suitcase so even if the baggage handlers open the case they can't get at the contents of the PacSafe except to X-Ray it. For a sharp edge while flying, I rely on the piece of flint from my flint and steel kit. In the past 10 years, although often questioned about it, it has never been refused for carry-on. Some airports I use strap suitcases together with heave plastic security bands, and getting to the hotel and not being able to open my suitcase is never a problem. The flint cuts right though it!

I've flown on numerous occasions with knives, but always in my checked luggage. I flew out to Washington state a few months back and took an old BM Pika I and my Boker Wharcom. I flew back with a SOG Blink factory second right from the source. :D

Out with two, back with three. And my fiancee had another BM Pika I for her own use.

Not a Wilderness Survival question -- unless the plane crashes into a mountain ... so it's off to Knife Laws. Please look around for the right forum before posting.

A UPS pilot once hijacked a UPS plane he was a passenger on, using two hammers and a speargun.

If you are going to carry a knife on a plane, make it a folding one. You will have to carry it in your checked luggage. My favorite trick is to carry a 4" Cold Steel "Voyager" folder inside of a beat-up (and smelly!) pair of running shoes. So far, no baggage handler or TSA inspector has inspected the inside of these foot-smell-reeking NewBalance cross-trainers. :D Works for me. You should do the same. People tend to avoid gross-looking (or smelling!) items of clothing.;)
