Airsoft for training

Chris, I was just wondering what your opinion on using Airsoft for training purposes. I have a gas powered pistol, and I was just wondering about it's potential (since I can use it inside my house) to practice in room clearing (because of the close similarity to them and real guns). and Handgun retention as well.

(I think that made sence)

I examined a glock, and was considerably impressed. These are plenty accurate for draw-point-shoot practice, and do compare favorably with the real thing in size, appearance, and so forth.
The one I looked at was balanced a bit funny, due to the non-steel slide assembly, and, of course, didn't have the nice tritium night sights my duty pistol has.
Just be sure you have the real pistol when you go back to work....

I am sorry guys but I am not all that familiar with those pistols. I have heard of them, but that is about it. I am used to simmunitions and good old wax bullets coming out of revolvers.
But anything is better than nothing.

Leo,

To Me, that's the big downer to Airsoft is the trigger. If you are a trigger control kinda guy, the mushniess of the airsoft guns distracts from good trigger feedback. In the case of Glocks, tigger re-set feedback is critical. The airsoft is all wrong for that.

However, like CJ says, compromised force-on-force training is still better than no Force training.

The one I looked at was one of the spring-air variety, that is, you had to manually work the slide for each shot. The gas-powered ones work just like a real pistol; the slide cycles and loads from the magazine! Unfortunately, the gas is quite expensive, in my (poverty-stricken ) opinion.
The trigger actually compared favorably to the real thing- Our department just went from the the heavier "New York" trigger to the 5-pound job, and it felt pretty close.

Well, if the trigger feels too different, I think it wouldn't be a good choice for indoors/home training (as in supplementing a dry fire program).
OTOH, for force-on-force scenarios, it shouldn't be such a big deal, especially if you consider that Simunition is not always available to regular folks, and wax bullets, though really useful, are kind of a PITA to set up. Just my opinion, of course.

I've tried the paint pellets out in my electric MP5, they work ok on hards targets (great for shooting at the TV set...) but they failed about 99% of the time when fired at my [former] friends :)

I like air-soft, they are great toys for us gun-nuts!

Now I just wonder how well made the 6mm paint pellets are.
