I bought an Aitor Bucanero some 6 or 7 years ago. It is a Spanish made knife, I have not seen it since on the market, so I don't know if this model is still available. I went wilderness camping a couple of years ago and used it...no...abused it extensively for 3 days in the mountains and bush. It has an 8" blade with a hollow handle with compass and a survival kit in a plastic vial. I was most dubious about the hollow handle.......no problem at all. It is totally black with a military green kydex sheath with paracord etc etc. The knife is about 13 to 14 inches long in all. The mountain we went up was virgin territory and even discovered a cave which was totally unknown to the owner of the property concerned. I literally hacked my way up the mountain, and the only slight damage caused was when the tip of the blade actually glanced off a rock in one of my wild swings!!! There was a minor chip...hardly noticeable...WOW~!!!! The blade did become somewhat dull at the end of a very hard day for both the knife and I. It does not sharpen easily, but when I eventually did get the edge back, it retains it for a very long time. What a knife!!!! This knife is far too large for everyday carry, but it is part of my survival kit when I go outdoors for all the larger jobs.
Does anybody else have this knife? And if so, what are your experiences? I would also like to know what steel is used, and what is the best way to get an edge on this knife. An Arkansas stone with Smith's honing oil is not good enough and takes too long.
