AK / AK47 differences

What are the differences between the AK and the AK47? When were each made? What options were available on each? I recently acquired an AK47 from Randucci (a great guy to deal with, by the way) and I was wondering what the differences are. Since I have an AK47, I'm thinking I may need to get an original now as well.
