Hey, I'm still patiently researching, trawling through all the HI forum old threads, reviews, and that really good Khukri FAQ that Bill links to on his signature, to find which Khuk is gonna suit me best. However i've been running into a small problem - your abbreviations!!

i've slowly figured loads out, but some still baffle me like BGRS for instance and YCS.
If theres anyone thinking of updating that FAQ anytime soon, a glossary of abreviations would certainly not go amiss.

If anyone wants to offer a little advise of their own, i'm sorta chosing between a 15" AK, BAS, Chiruwa AK, . I wanna find out a bit more about the 12" AK too.
I'm after a real all-rounder at the 15" or smaller end. primarially its gotta chop, so the AK seems a good choice, but how much slicing can you do with one of these? would a BAS be more suitable? I don't really want to have to carry loads of knives, each for its own little job when i'm hiking/camping or on excercise (British infantry). Looks are, of course, important and the lighter and smaller Sirupati family aren't really 'phat' or beefy enough for my taste. The concept of the indestructible Chiruwa really appeals to me, but actually thats probably getting more towards the 'useful for chopping, too heavy for anything else' end of things?

any help appreciated
Alex

Welcome to the Forums.

BGRS: Baby Ganga Ram Special (a model of Khukuri named after a Kami
named Ganga Ram)

YCS: YVSA Cherokee Special (a model of Khukuri based on a design
and model made by YVSA)

n2s

While any of those three would be a good choice for "all arounder," I'd think go with the BAS based on your stated needs.

Don't be too quick to discount the Sirupati. A 15" or 18" Siru would be a fine choice as well, not to mention a formidable weapon.

Edti: I just logged on and didn't realize the Bura AK was still up for grabs. Jump on it, it'll meet all your needs, exceed all your expectations and you won't find a better deal.

There is a thread about 2 months old on this very burning issue.

It depends upon whether you will be carrying it long distances, like back packing, or whether it will do a lot of vehicle time.

The opinions were a lot of fun to listen to. Keep in mind weights and lengths vary. YOu might find just the AK to carry on special, like the one today. The BAS has a lot of admirers and not a few fanatics.

IN the end though, the only way to find the best is to hold them and use them. If you live near someone who has more than one, a visit might be a good thing.

Ha! what a lot of instant replies! thanks you guys :)

y'know i read that AK offer right after i posted this one! I don't actually know what the PGA is - is it just a weekly special offer, or a defective going cheap or something? I am interested indeed!

y'know i do wish i knew someone with a khuk i could hold and test to decide, but theyre pretty rara things here. Thats why i'm so carefully choosing!

We have quite a few in the UK. Might pay you to do some searching. The guy across the street might have a khukuri or two.

PGA = Pala's Give Aways
They are usually just sale items, not blemished merchandise. If there's anything amiss with the PGA, Uncle Bill will mention it in the post.

I got a BAS for my first khukuri based on the recommendations here, and I think it was a wise choice. However, the Bura AK will be a wonderful way to start your collection. :)

I notice you called dibs on the 15" AK.
FWIW...While you're awaiting the new blade,
here's why I think you'll find it just what you want.

Khukuris are new to me, but I've accumulated three;
#1 15"22oz BAS, #2 18"28oz AK, & #3 14"18oz Villager Standard

I thought the BAS was a good chopper (trimming low tree limbs)
And it is compared to my old $9 machete.
But the 18" AK is a whole different animal.

Side by side, the 18" AK looks twice the size of the 15" BAS.
And it feels better than twice as effective when chopping.
I thought I'd get the smaller Villager as a gift for my dad.
After giving it a try, I think I may keep the Villager
and pass the BAS on to my dad. (He'll probably will never use it,
so I'm not really shorting him. And the BAS is a great blade.)

The 14" Villager has an AK like profile (wider blade
in the forward chopping region)and chops almost as well.
This even though its more than half a pound lighter
and 4" shorter.......I was surprised...

So......Congratulations.

P.S. The biggest danger using a khuk (many here have commented on)
is that it often keeps going past the item chopped off or missed.
Make sure the arc of your arm movement does not go anywhere near
your legs, an extended arm or any other valuable commodity.

Get a BAS. Best looking and cheapest. Wonderful all around khuk. If I could have only one, this would be it.

My BAS is still my all time favorite. Even after AK's, Siru's, a GS, even some custom designs. For weight, size and overall useability, it can't be beat. Other designs beat it for certain tasks, but the BAS is a jack of all trades.

Sorry, I'm an AK fan.
The 18" Ak is the Beastie from the Eastie, the true Himalayan Hacker, used by Indra and Agni to carve those mountains in Nepal.
When the job needs done, the AK is the one.
If you have a need for a more delicate blade, the Karda that comes with an 18" AK is a full-size fixed blade working knife. And you got it as a throw-in on the price of the AK monster.

You be the judge, but the AK don't budge.
BAS is cool, but AK's the tool.

Keith, the impoverished.

Yeah, but I am not going to haul my AK around on a backpacking trip. The BAS does nicely there.

..I do. I carry it in my soft side briefcase. I'm 6'3", 220 tho. I don't even notice it.

Each to his own, eh?

Keith

I guess that is why there are so many different models. I am a big guy too, but getting old and not in the shape I was, so I save on weight whenever possible. If I lost the beer gut, then the AK would not be noticed I am sure.

I think so..ditto...

If I want to carry a sidearm and a Khukuri it's not going to be a 20" 3 pound AK.

There's also the problem going through woods and rock with just too much stuff hanging off you...no, I do not envy a soldier all that gear.
