After reading Chefs enthusiastic comments about his AK Bowie I skimmed through the DOTD and found one still available on 11/30. I have been keeping an eye on these off and on the past few years as a useful tool to my BBQ ribs among other uses:thumbup:. Glad I got it, what a monster, nice and sharp!!
Thanks again Yangdu , as usual the shipping was quick and the kids will like the hats. If any of you guys and gals have been thinking about the hats I'd grab em they are fully lined and warm, great for the cold weather.

Wow, that's an awesome knife. I don't know if I need one of those, but I need one of those. Definitely cool:)

Great photo's that give good reference as to the spine thickness and taper.

Your AK Bowie really looks like a monster blade among HI monster blades! :p ;) :D

I can also vouch for the Tibetan hats as being well made and comfortable. :)

How do you like the balance?

Mine is heavy, and blade-heavy, but not like I thought it'd be, it actually balances very well, primarily for chopping, but not bad for other work.

It is blade heavy like you say, but I can work with it. The handle is comfortable as well, overall its a good fit for me. I look forward to slicing through some BBQ ribs with it.

Is that one of Koster's rehandles? Both are nice I like the first too how did you go about it?

Thanks,
zeke

^^ love the second handle even better than the standard one (blasphemy!)
By the way, there is a philosophy that the safest place for a lanyard hole is where the blade meets the handle instead of at the back of the handle which is doable with the second handle. Any thoughts?

Thanks! I did both of them. The first one is a leather and sinew wrap, soaked in epoxy. The second one is osage orange with brass hollow pins.

I've tried both, and personally I like the lanyard at the end of the handle, but both can work. It depends what one is doing.

If chopping, they both work. If stabbing, only a lanyard at the end of the handle works. IMO.

I read something a few days ago that might apply. I forget what kuk it was a review for, so I can't properly cite. The guy was mentioning the fact that on some of the bigger choppers on the blade side is safer. It chokes up the arc on the swing of the blade if it slips out of your hand, hopefully keeping it from swinging back into you.

Andrew: Do you use sandpaper to sharpen? I noted a distinct wavy haze on the osage edge. It looks just like my CAK with 1500-grit.

Holy Toledo that is a thick spine!! I'm not sure my girly hands would be able to wrap around that handle. My Butahn sword handle is a bit too much and I think your AK Bowie would be a bit worse.

Andy, how hard was it to re-handle your two? I might give that a shot. I've been wanting an AK Bowie or Munk Chunk for some time now. I might try to get one to give for a Xmas present too...

How hard? I guess that's dependent on your skill level. Have you ever put handles on a full tang knife?

What makes these a bit tricky is the fact that, since the tangs are hand forged, they are uneven and need to be smoothed down.

They are generally sold with scales on them, but Yangdu sometimes sells blems, which are a real deal. So, you have to take the old handle off to replace them.

I think Dan Koster has a tutorial on his website, or at least he used to.

I also have to stretch to get a good grip on my Bhutan. :(

Looks like if I'm able to snare a Munk Chunk Cleaver, it will need to be re-handled
to make it really usable as I don't want to think of the damage that could be done if, when using an oversized MCC with greasy hands from chopping meat, it should slip and go flying!
