i was wondering if ak bowie woul make a good survival knife or would cold steel trailmaster be better?

AK Bowie is awesome, saved my bacon many times. it pretty well lives in the 4x4 now. Ridiculously strong, ridiculously tough, holds an edge very well. Works for cleaning fish and chopping wood. Cant say enough good things about it

The AK bowie would be a great choice for a hard work/survival knife. The older examples have a thick spine and are very stout, but the newer ones showing on the forum are lighter and faster, but also less burdensome to carry and less tiring to use.I would bet my life on an AK bowie.Joe.
Post script-I also have a CS trailmaster, the stainless variety that I purchased in 1991 or 1992,(I forget).Great knife, but I would pick up the AK bowie if I had to bug out.Joe.

I really like the Bowie, both versions to me are bulletproof, the older one is a beast but the newer one is a bit slimmer and weighs less which is a plus for me when carrying it. The CS knife is ok but for me the Ak Bowie blows it away. But just my 2 cents.

The AKB will serve very well as a survival knife but I'd still carry a smaller back up for finer work. A Swiss army, Leatherman, or Mora would work.

Some personal experience: I bought a Cold Steel Trailmaster some 12 years ago when they were made out of the really good Carbon V. It was a VERY expensive knife to me as I was a dirt poor college kid. A year later I was still a poor college kid, but I had discovered HI and the AK Bowie.

The AKB blows the TM out of the water in pretty much every way.

Just thinking out loud here but help me if you can. I decided awhile back that a Pen Knife is a near future must have item. I wasn't quite as enamored of the AKBowie as the majority here seem to be. In my admittedly small mind the Pen Knife would, could, should do everything the AKBowie can do and maybe a few more chores too.
I'm of course hopeless and will probably have to have both at some point but does this make sense to anyone with a full functioning brain?

The Pen Knife sings to me and it's a Khuk or pretty close!

Should be getting some in pretty soon to me thinks. Auntie said about 1 month. Course when your semi poor one can do a lot of dreaming and researching especially amongst fellow addicts frequently found here abouts.

On Cold steel's website forums there is the same question as to which is better. Of course you have the Cold Steel fans saying the Ak Bowie is not as good as the TrailMaster which is to be expected. I think the Trailmaster is a fantastic knife but I wouldn't place my money on it out working an Ak Bowie by HI. I have an Ak Bowie on its way to me and can not wait to use the BEAST!!!!

The newer AK bowies are lighter than the older models, and as such they are lightning fast and still possess that gorgeous broad, sharp blade.Kami Bhakta displays his mastery of the AK bowie design and as has been stated before by Steely Gunz, has breathed new life into this classic outdoor/fighter.I think you will enjoy this blade Rawdog!

I ordered mine Longer and heavier than usual so I should get a very heavy stout knife!!!!! I want a BEAST and I know this knives are Beasts anyway but I really wanted a heavy blade!!! I've also got a 20" inch AK on its way from HI. Can't wait to receive these blades.

I actually read the comments on the cold steel forum and only 1 out of 31 posts said the trail master was the best.
I don't take the word "preferred" to mean the best.
I have no experience at all with the HI but I have had a lot of great experiences with the trail master and others.
IMO no reason to change for me if it suits my needs.

Nobody is saying switch over and never use the Trailmaster again.Trailmaster is a proven great knife. Its been around a long time it has it's place in the market and nothing is going to take that away from it. But the Ak Bowie from what I have seen thru videos is a whole different animal. It takes Beast to a whole new level. Its one of those custom type blades that a normal production knife can't really compete with.

I was mildly interested in a Trailmaster for a short while but I read too many bad things about the handle. Issue's were reported in the comfort and durability area's.

The AK Bowie is a very large knife (so is the Trailmaster), but if you don't mind it's mass then I'd say without hesitation that it will serve you well. I could rattle off a few other reason's why I'd pick the HI over the Trailmaster but all of my reasons are a matter of opinion.

A member recently posted their mini AK bowie which I thought was very cool. Here's the link...

That mini-AKB is a winner. Over the years, I have started to gravitate toward smaller/lighter camp knifes. A gigantic chopper is cool, but most of the time I don't need much more than a "regular" fixed blade. I asked Yangdu to put my name on the list for one of the next run of mini-AKBs to come down the line. I'm thinking a nice high and tight sheath to displace it's very manageable weight would make it a great carry blade for the outdoors.

They make a mini one too....Oh man I'm gonna have to purchase one of them as well somewhere down the line. I fell in love with the regular AKB when I first saw it on youtube.
