for an all around knife, which is better, an AK or a so called plain YCS (Yvsa, i still think even the "plain" is one of the most gorgeous knives, at least from Uncle Bill's pic in the forum). As all around, i mean something i can strap on my belt and go through the woods or yard doing any random tasks, such as chopping, splitting, brush clearing, trail making, de-branching, etc., or even self defense if absolutely neccessary (though i would hope that wouldnt happen in my back yard). thanks in advance.

Yvsa and others have used both a lot more than I have so I'll let them jump in here. My "guess" would be that you wouldn't find a nickel's worth of difference.

The YCS cuts like a heavier khukuri due to its blade design. Its lighter than an 18" AK, so it'll be easier to pack with you. It should do everything you mentioned well, except maybe splitting, since the blade doesn't taper as abruptly as the AK. If you plan to do a lot of splitting, you might want to go with the AK.
