im been thinking a few days about picking up a ak47. so far ive been struggleing between a older sar1 for 379(ban modle with out the fun goodies) but it had pretty dark hard wood stocks and a post ban romanian with all the fun attachments for 359 but its stocks were unfinished and looked like they were roughly carved out of 2x4s.

then i found this, msrp of 1300 bucks. it was the last stop on my list of gun shops to hit (again) and this struck my attention. the one that they have is only 725 bucks unfired. aparently there one of the best ak47s that you can get :p if all works out well and i can get people to donate because of my birthday ill have her in the morning.

Excellent! The Arsenal USA AKs are the best available. Be certain that you're actually getting the folding stock instead of the pinned fake folder that you'll have to buy a replacement stock for. I prefer the 7.62x39 instead of the 5.54 because ammunition is ~$85/1,000 and magazines are cheap $5-$15. Do not get the .223 version since mags will be a nightmare to find.

well, the gun shop employee must not have known what he was talking about when i talked to him on the phone. the gun that they had and the gun that it really was are not quite the same thing

turns out that the gun that they did have is a armory usa bulgarian ak47(Arsenal USA was there old name) . btw, i pick it up at 10 in the morning. ive done payed for it but i did not have two forums of id so ive got to register it in the morning.

the reciever looks stamped to me BUT im no ak expert and the website says that they use milled recievers, eather way its alot better (thicker) metal than a regular ak47. this has a NICE solid feel to it.

I don't think any of the guns you mention are AK47's - they are the semi auto copies of the Ak 47 . I hate when the news spouts off about an ak47 being used in a crime when it is total bull poop. You can get a legal ak in some states but they are over 20,000 from what I have seen and you need a permit. Enjoy your semi auto ak- I like my sar 1 :)

well they are generally known as AK47s, to be correct the stamped reciever ones are AKM's , not AK47's , some of the select fire arent technically AK47's or AKMs, the east german ones with a folding stock in 7.62X39 are MPiKMs 72's, several diff names for korean/chinese/etc, but they are all kalashnikovs i guess, all designed by kalashnikov . but call what ya want matters none to me, i understand what ya mean ....

i wouldnt worry about the wood on one, if ya dont like ya can put on diff stock sets very easy, and they are fairly cheap too, most of them anyway ($30 to $150 or so for russian laminate) or ya could get a folder too (ie east german side folders about $80, romanian $50)

the gun in the pic above looks to me to have the stamped rec'r FWIW.

if ya want a AK to shoot, the romanian SAR's are good, or the WASR's are supposed to be good too, i have no first hand experience with the WASR though, for me it would have to be pretty cool nad be preban to be worth much over $500 or so, FWIW i have seen a lot of pretty nice ones for sale on gunsnet.net AK forums for $400 to $700 that individuals have refinished/installed new wood/flash hiders and comps/trigger groups/etc, darned nice ones imho. saw a '74 with a russian side folder, fake suppressor, looked just like bin ladins, the guy guaranteed it to work flawlessly, he wanted $900 IIRC, a deal if ya want a krinkov. the SARs and other romanian ones have the side rail for optics which i really like, i put a b-square mount and an old aimpoint on my '74 and really like it, with out the rail its kinda hard to put a scope on them, oh ya acn it just looks jerry rigged to me, the new ones that mount on the upper handguard are the best, IIRC, still dont like the looks though, the saddle mounts which fit over the rec'r are funky imho, how do ya clean the thing with the saddle mount on it lol, just wouldnt work well i dont think, of course many wouldnt put optics on one anyway, i do like the one on mine though a lot FWIW.

AKs are lots of fun imho because ya can add items to personalize the thing, lots of parts available, all pretty cheap really, esp compared to an AR15 let me tell ya, i got sticker shock buying mounts/etc for my AR after a few yrs of buying for the AKs i have, the AR stuff is high $$ compared to the AK stuff. but just neat guns to buy and modify to were it suits ya, the forum on gunsnet is the best i have found for AKs, i have bought a lot of stuff from folks posting on the boards there, all with no problem, they seem to be good people from my experience, a real friendly board similar to BF imho. also some of those guys can ID a AK from pics/etc, some really obscure ones too like north korean/etc, they really know the AK on that site imho, ,lo ts of good info available on that board.

folks say AK's arent very accurate but i have shot mine lots at 300 yards at an 18" plate and hit 8 outta 10 times fairly easy, with iron sights, cant do much better with my colt lightweight sporter FWIW, not without a scope, myself anyway. some think ya cant hit a barn at 300 yards with any AK, not correct, they will suprise ya, mine did anyway.

the 5.45X39 '74 is a good round, lots easier to find ammo now than a few yrs ago, ya used to not be able to find any HP ammo (required at some ranges i go to) but not a prob any more, a unique round though, if i had just 1 i would want 7.62X39 not 5.45X39 myself, but nothing wrong with the 5.45, for the what i use it for anyway, i got 2 cases of ammo with my '74 when i got it so ammo hasnt ever been a problem for me lol.

love my maahdi AKM and my AK74, great rifles for the $$, more accurate than ya will believe, and jam proof imho, in several thousand rounds niether of mine has ever had a problem.

You are 100% correct sir! That is why I'm such a fan of the SKS and why I'd consider an SKS factory made to take AK mags as an alternative or instead of the AK 'clone'. Nevertheless, I do like them (the AK) and aside from the occaisonal horror story (like recieving your rifle only to find that your front site is canted 20 degrees) I have heard very good things about the AK copies/clones...

Thanks for the info SIFU1A. And yes, I think that is a stamped reciever pictured above. However, there is no problem with that either way.

Make mine 30 caliber - I'm a fan of the 7.62x39mm due to its increased penetration over the higher velocity rounds.

And there is something about a wooden stock that says "rifle" to me. Hard to explain - it is a smell thing and a tactile thing.

So I'd go with the wood stock for about half the price!!! Hell, you can probably pick up a good quality wood replacement stock set for $20 on Ebay.

Anyway, I'm jealous dude - I will have to teach Hapkido to children for the rest of the month before I have enough in my 'slush fund' to accomodate a new AK ;)

I have a PARA IMI GALIL.. shorty folder and I love it .. used mainly for show and home defence if that case ever arrises.. it is tricked out with all the bells and whistles .. PentagonLight HAIII X3 tactical light mounted on the left front and laser barrel mounted under and red dot scope on top.. looks very intimadating and I love it lol ..

just got back from the range a few hours ago. i took the ak and the sks, its a toss up. i havent shot eather enough to know the one that i want to stick with but its going to be a close call. at 50 yards the ak was putting 4 rounds in the size of a 50 cent peice. i elivated it to a inch high at 100 yards and at that distance it was emptying 20 rounds in to a 3 inch group (minus the few that i pulled) this really pleased and suprised me. most romanian and chinese aks that you find today like the sar1 and the wsar10 aint near as accurate as this bulgarian ak is. there was some collareral dammage though, i put a round threw my dads sweater :D i fired and all i could see was a cloud of blue fibers. all in all i made out pretty good, i found several boxes of unopened ammo setting at the bench that somebody left behind on accident and can of muzzle loader caps that somebody droped (really needed those)

im alittle displeased at there customer service though, the otherday i called them about replacing the cleaning rod, the threaded end is bent slightly (not that im ever going to use it but if im gona pay 700+ for a ak with a warranty im gona get my moneys worth) i was basically told that unless i knew the part number of the cleaning rod they could not help me and then i was hung up on  i guss it was just some girl that they had working the counter that had no experiance, ill make another call monday and hopefully find someone who actually knows what a ak47 cleaning rod is.

i want that drum :D

Loks like allot of fun :) what SKS do you have there, I just got a Russian, Tula 1954 and love it so far :D

chinese triangle 23 1963, matching numbers and no import markings of any kind. (ive had several people call it a vietnam bring back?) i want to collect one from each country, and then one from each factory. ill probably never do it but for the price i can try.

Hey there fellas. I believe I was mistaken in my earlier post - yours does in fact appear to be a milled reciever. And that's an excellent report regarding accuracy.

And a nice looking Chicom SKS there too I might add. I helped a buddy clean up & restock his Chinese a couple months ago. Haven't gotten to shoot it with him yet though...

Well I took the plunge myself & picked up a WASR10. Not neary as nice as yours but then it was $300 less too. Anyway, I hope to report serviceable accuracy - probably not going to touch a .50 Cent peice though! We'll see... ;)

My romanian AK was stamped but man was that thing tough! It was almost
impossible to make the thing misfire. I think it was a SAR but that was two
yrs and many rifles ago.

And the drum either 75 or 90 rds are pretty good as well, they do rattle
though and watch your fingers when loading them. They wind up as you
load them. I wound mine up without loading the thing and then hit the
"release" that tab was like a buzz saw!!

I stick with .308's from now on however.

a few yrs ago me and a bud who was a dealer at the time randomly picked 2 AKs outta about 23, a stamped maahdi and a milled bulgarian, took them and shot at 50 and 100 yds, off a bag, the stamped was a little more accurate, go figure. dont know what it proves but it suprised me.

I read a similar account regarding the SKS. They took a milled Yugo, a stamped Chicom & if I remember right, Romainian SKS & had a little shooting competition on a rainy windy day. The stamped Chinese actually won the little contest!

What does it prove? That the easier / cheaper method of manufacturing stamped as opposed to milled recievers gives equal performance - at least where accuracy is concerned. I don't think it proves anything more than that though ;)

I got a bag of accessories with my rifle including a leather sling, oil bottle & cleaning kit. In with that & the manual from Century was what I am told is a test target. I measured the farthest rounds from one another & it shows a clean 3" 5 round grouping!!!

Needless to say I am pleased :D . Hopefully I can duplicate it myself but it would appear that the rumors I've heard about the newer "GP" WASR10's being a bit higher quality than the older ones may be true. I don't expect a tack driver but 3" groups are pretty good for a 16" barrel. Heck, this thing is only about 34 1/2" long from stem to stern

Can't wait to hit the range!

Nice looking Arsenal Ak you have there KaBar. And seeing that pic of your SKS makes me want to pull my Tula out this evening and spend some QT with it. I enjoyed the pics.
