AKI - My Own Personal First Time Experience

First of all, I may screw these comments up somethin' awful. I hardly ever drink, but Friday nite caused Saturday to be braincell death day for me. So excuse the wandering in this post, but it's a dandy.

Most know I collect Curt Erickson's knives, among others. Well, this year Julie Warenski had three knives, plus a few more! The display included several daggers, etc that were both Julie's AND Curt's makers marks.

Well, if you've heard of how the AKI works, most knives have a fixed price, the number of "bidders" (read that buyers) is a fixed number. I imagine there were probably about the same number of knives as invitees, because some makers bring more than others, though there is a minimum and maximum number each maker can bring.

And these guys, if they decide on the knives they are NOT interested in, they more or less give their "option" to bid to a friend or guy who really wants that knife, and that guy collects as many of those "options" as he can because he will stand a MUCH better chance of winning "that" knife. Remember, all the knives are priced, no bidding, just drawing for the right to buy (a few expections to this rule).

Sorry about the long explanation. I knew little or nothing about this fun they have, no way could I deal with trying to do all the "optioning" WITH THIS HUMONGOUS hangover - so I only put my name into four drawings - just my single ticket. And they were four knives everyone wanted, but my chances were zilch because the boxes for each of these four knives were stuffed with every name in the house.

Lo and behold, 15 min after the drawing, someone comes up to me and says I have first right to a Jurgen Steinau - image below (sorry, no image hosting here). The title of the knife (LOL) is 'Big Knife with Hook".

When I got to Jurgen's table, it was all true. And there were guys lined up four deep who wanted to buy it from me. It was f'ing NUTS. Absolute pure luck. Up against boxes stuffed with every ticket, full to the brim, and I only put a single ticket on each of four knives and drew one of the biggies.

But beyond that, I got to see STeven again - we compare attire, since no one has ever seen me out of a Hawaiian shirt, LOL.

I met more people than I can remember, Steve Rapp, Larry Fuegen, Mark Strauss (dealer)- super good guy), Angelo Lobefaro, Don Hume, Walter Wells and Vic Wells, and on and on.

That's it. Unbelievable experience. And doubtless this is all incomplete in some way since I have, today, maybe only 10% of the braincells I had before the Fri nite chardonnay.

Bob, you should know better to drink that much at your age;):D

I sure hope you were able to sell or trade the Steinau (this one is not really my taste) for one of your beloved Warenski/Eriksons:thumbup::cool:

Thanks Roger, maybe I lucked out because I followed the rules, who knows. Loved the show. Marcel, to answer your inquiry, I didn't even touch the knife or write a check. It immediately "changed hands". Bottom line - I also was drawn for a Curt/Julie knife that I wanted, that ended up costing me close to nothing because of my luck on the Steinau.

Will I go again year after next? DUH?!!

EDIT: Marcel, the Steinau I drew wasn't exactly my kind of taste in a knife, either. It was certainly cutting edge art, no pun intended, but I like a knife you can actually hold with your entire hand. "Big Hook" was not a knife one really holds, which is rather a contradiction in terms.

Really enjoyed your recap as I've never been to one of these events. Sounds absolutely wild and lots of fun.

Glad things worked out well and congrats on the journey that got you your knife. Always adds personal value when a memory is attached to obtaining a knife

Bob, good for you. Hope to see photos of it real soon.

what a show that must have been!
Thanks for sharing your experience Bob.

Bob, congratulations, on your good fortune X2. I'm really glad you were able to parlay the "hook" into something you really wanted and will enjoy. Hope my old buddy Harvey Dean did well.

Congrats. I love hist stuff (though I agree that that one wouldn't have been my top choice).

Bob - Sorry I missed meeting you there. Great show/sale! That Steinau you got was compelling. I was tempted to drop for the smaller one but resisted.

I wonder what that small one went for - it had an opener of $6500. I would imagine it went for $12k-$15k, considering the slim folder went for $20k.
