AKTI blade measuring survey

My Fall 2003 issue of the AKTI newsletter arrived today. It contained an article about a letter that AKTI sent to all 50 state Attorneys' General. The goal is to see whether each state that has a blade length law has also developed a protocol for measuring blade length. So far, 11 states have responded. Some of them do not seem to understand what they are being asked. It will be interesting to see the final result of this survey. If there is a lot of ambiguity, AKTI wants to help develop a measurement protocol.

I would rather see blade length laws repealed altogether. Knowing that this is not going to happen everywhere, I think that a standardized measurement protocol is a good goal to pursue also. At least people can be certain that what they are carrying is of legal length.

Your thoughts?

I think that sometimes it can be very dangerous to stir the pot like this. Who knows what changes will be made. I would be VERY suprised if it doesn't make things worse.

When I was a kid I hated to eat my vegetables. My mom always made sure that I had a 'reasonable' amount. Sometimes, however, through some oversight she'd forget altoether and I'd find myself without any vegetables on my plate. You can bet your bottom dollar that I made sure not to do ANYTHING to bring anything having to do with vegetables to her attention!!!

Ideally a review of these laws would reveal their stupidity and bring about their repeal, but what is more likely to happen is that the lawmakers decide that they're TOO lenient and decide to 'close the loopholes' to show how 'tough on crime' they are.

Forgive my pessimism.
