I have people mention sometimes why should they belong to the American Knife and Tool Institute. Here is one reason. The ability to band together as an industry and be proactive.

A few years ago law enforcement went out of its way to misinterpret the automatic knife law in Florida. They were reclassified as Ballistic knives and in one fell swoop went from totally legal to totally illegal.

AKTI took lead in raising the funds needed to take two stabs at getting that opinion overturned through clarifying the legislation involved. Automatics are once again legal in Florida because on June 2nd, Governor Bush signed into law HB 1227. This clarified that in order for a knife to be considered a "ballistic" knife the blade had to disconnect as a projectile.

Our first attempt was added to a bill that did not pass so we lost the time and the money involved. With the second attempt a separate bill was created instead of "riding" another and we were successful.

The Florida Cutlery Association was formed from interested parties that took lead on the implementation while AKTI continued to act as a fund raising collection point. About $20k was spent in these two attempts.

Good Work Guys...
